Why is the alliance symbol a lion?

Every time they release one of those special shop mounts I always cross my fingers for this–since it looks like they’re never gonna just put them in game. Horses is one of the reasons I rolled a human, way back when xD

Anyhoo, the OP brings up a really good point about lions not being in the EK. I didn’t really read the rest of the thread yet, but my thinking is that maybe it could have been derived from ancient heraldry or someones coat of arms. Plus they’re majestic kitty cats

This is pretty awesome.

I assume because it’s defined by a monarchy. Which I’m honestly disappointed hasn’t gone wrong for them yet. It’s time for a mad king.

Probably sailors and adventurers were visiting kalimdor from time to time. And pirates ofc.

It’s lore like this that do a fine job of shutting up people complaining about the new skins coming out it shows all this may have been planned for a long time.

I uh… think some posters are misunderstanding the question being asked. Yes, the lion is usually meant to represent power, pride, courage, etc. But the OP isn’t asking what the symbol means.

The question is, how has the Alliance been using it as their heraldry long before they discovered Kalimdor when presumably no lions exist in the Eastern Kingdoms? Yes, there are “lions” in some Eastern Kingdom zones, but those are clearly cougars and not the maned African lion that the Alliance is using (and a single Rare in the Twilight Highlands doesn’t count).

It’s probably just a harmless anachronism since lion sigils are a pretty common trope in high fantasy.

a bird would make more sense as the alliance symbol as literally 5 of the main races use birds in their iconography

It’s a good question - someone should ask Mr Hazzikostas to explain it.

Perhaps some early explorer Hunter stumbled upon Kalimdor, managed to tame a lion pet and brought it back to Stormwind. I reckon they would have thought it was a very regal beast.

Britain was part of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire had a habit of collecting rare and interesting looking animals (lions included) and taking them around for show and “sport”. We still have travelling circuses in the US thanks to that tradition, though they’ve cut back on the animals lately.

Cougars are basically lions plus there is literally a lion mount which thousands of people have = they aren’t extinct.

Have you guys not seen the lion sitting right inside the stormwind gates?

Because the original symbol on the flag of Stormwind in the RTS Warcraft Orcs and Humans was a Lion.
It was a Lion in Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness.

The main Alliance faction has been the human kingdoms, particularly that of Stormwind.

In the RPG, there were a lot of lions and dire lions in the Badlands.

I always thought it was the dark portal

I always thought it was a hoof print or a toilet seat. :woman_shrugging:

Or, a non-joking answer, tribal gibberish.

Each Human kingdom had it’s own symbol. The lion was Stormwind’s and it represented a few of the nobles of Arathi who went south and formed the kingdom. Arathi is near Alterac Mountains which would have had the animal.

Years ago there was a speculation that Starglethorn Vale had Lions at one time when the kingdom was founded. The symbol now pretty much represents the Alliance only because the original Alliance was the re gathering of the Human nations during the second War and any other race who fell victim to the Horde assult (Aka, Dwarves, Gnomes and Elves). Since Stormwind is the last of those nations, it is why the new Alliance uses the symbol of the last Human Kingdom.
