Were there once lions in the eastern kingdoms that were hunted to extinction? Otherwise how would the alliance even know what a lion is when all the lions can only be found Kalimdor, which the humans didn’t discover until the events of Warcraft 3.
It should be a griffon.
Nah. I think a horse is a better representation.
There are mountain lions (cougars) all over Arathi and Alterac.
When you’re right, you’re right.
But which end of the horse?
They love lions in Stormwind!
Because we are proud of our faction , we are royalty and strength not some tribe living in red desert.
Same reason lion decals were used by European nobles in the real world.
You don’t have to be native to a place with lions to think lions are cool.
Actually… yeah, how did they know what a lion looked like?
The emblem is a lion, not a cougar. It has a mane.
We have evidence of them knowing of lions in medieval England/Europe, but we’ve never seen humans on Kalimdor prior to Warcraft 3… but the emblem for Stormwind is much older than that.
Probably like how the English royal flag has a lion on it and there have never been lions in the UK.
It’s possible that explorers visited kalimdor.
There’s one left:
Well that doesn’t really apply.
The lion doesn’t concern it’s self of the opinions of the sheep!
For Rohan!
They have lion mounts for sale in Stormwind, if I am not mistaken.
Because, particularly early in Warcraft’s history, it was still a pretty normal medieval fantasy game and lions are by far one of the most common heraldry symbols in both games and irl.
We know humans were around before the planet split, because the Shadow-pan have records saying humans were involved in the Panadren rebellion against the Mogu, while Shao hao was emperor when Pandaria was split off into it’s own continent and he hid it in the mists.
So not only where humans on Kalimdor, they were on OG Kalimdor, and had Lions in walking distance.
They just kept the symbology of lions while forgetting where it’s actually from.
That’s rather interesting. I didn’t actually expect humans to have lasted that long - where did they come from originally? I imagine Blizzard doesn’t want to take the real-world stance and make them have the same origin as we did. If I remember right it’s related to the vrykul…?
