Why is one expansion good, the next terrible?

They'll find a formula that worked well (Legion) then toss it right out the window to make a completely new formula (BFA)

This has been going on with almost every expansion giving us a roller coaster experience. The expansion could be great or cause ~4 million subs to jump ship forcing Blizzard to stop releasing sub numbers.

Two different teams working on them.
A Team, B Team.

It's how they intend to keep WoW "lively" instead of growing stale. The problem with that is they continue to spoonfeed us the stale content (huge amounts of dailies to do to keep us busy, chasing achievements such as Pathfinder, and now even World Quests. On top of other things now like Island Expeditions, blah blah...) while radically mixing the game up results in a completely opposite effect of what is actually desired.

Blizzard Entertainment: If it was working well, and it wasn't broken, stop trying to fix it.

This. And this team was the same team that helmed WoD. With the addition of some new creative team members.
Has been like that since Cata. Basically keep re inventing the wheel to try cater to more people instead of developing the game systems they have in place to keep the already invested players playing.

If you look at the progression from Vanilla to WotLK they literally just kept developing the game rather than breaking it down and rebuilding it.

A better way of explaining would be if I was to show side by side comparison of each expansion to a new player who had never played the game I think they would easily see the huge differences between wrath -> Cata -> MoP e.t.c as opposed to Vanilla -> BC -> WotLK.
Most of BFA's problems come from losing the systems of legion imo. Easy to see.

They simply did not compensate classes enough for losing artifacts.

It seems to me what they do is get an expansion that works, and attempt to pare it down to the critical components. Then they build the expansion around these.

That's what it looks like when you compare Legion and BfA, only they guessed completely wrong and installed all the components that burned people out in Legion but none of the fun.

This. Definitely this.

The old saying goes 'dont "fix" it if it isn't broken"
Because legion was only good in comparison and wasn't that good overall unless you thought completely breaking game balance to the point where they needed stat templates for pvp was good and open world pvp wasn't an option because people had legendary items after they cracked some nuts was a thing.
Look on the bright side.

The next expac is gonna be awesome.
I like the A, B team theory. It would mean the WoD team has been at it again. However, WoD had great classes and alts were fun, so... Next xpac I can tell all my friends who left to come back.

Simply put.. the amount of effort to produce expansions has steadily increased over time to the point where the 'normal' expansion cycle is no longer sufficient.. leading to a cycle of Filler expansion followed by planned expansion since MoP. Hence why WoD was stripped down so that Legion could be further developed.. and why BfA is so hamfisted because it is filler for the inevitable Old God expansion to follow.

More like...

"If it aint broken, fix it til it is."
BFA is the worst offender in the lot. You basically have had everything you worked for erased.

The cosmetic stuff is still there but not much you did in legion helped you in bfa no matter how hard you worked.

It's nearly a total reset and as if your starting a new character.

It does actually feel that they release "filler" content you are right. But you have to ask if they just built on past success rather than tear it down and try to reinvent the wheel each time if they wouldn't have and easier time of the development cycle while actually keeping the community happy.

BfA could have been soooooo epic, everything was in place for it. But it just feel rushed and badly designed to get it out to market on time. They would have been better off just designing a new Raid Tier to keep the player base going for a bit longer and actually bothering to finish the expansion properly.
so the question now is which team was on BFA, my guess is the E team since ive seen blizzard do a better job keeping people playing.
You all hated Legion when it was current. Now you love it hindsight.

It’s you.

Not saying BFA is the best thing ever but neither was any other expansion, it’s just MMO grind with a different hat on, same thing, every time.
