Well funny anecdote.
Back in the day, alpha, any “thing” in the game that existed, but didn’t have an actual 3D model associated with it, was rendered as a pink cube with some guys face on all 6 sides. It was not uncommon to see folks running around with one of those for a piece of missing gear or something.
So, if that’s what you see, your install may be corrupted.
It means Blizzard doesn’t like you, according to the forum people. That’s what everyone told me. Though, someone did recommend a shaman for this issue.
If you mean the newly readded naxx stuff, the forums often takes awhile to update for new gear that gets added to the game and until it does shows as the checkered box.
Had the same issue with the dark ranger set after it first came out until eventually the forum updated for it.
It’s a warning.

My vulpera priest doesn’t have an armory appearance despite being over the level threshold so I fee that one.
