FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) has been around for a long time and yet you all have been okay with it for a very long time and yet until now specifically now in dragonflight of all other expansions to come out against FOMO. Why waited until now in dragonflight to complain about FOMO? Was it because of content creators or was it something else? Why now when you had so many years and expansions to complain about FOMO and why pick dragonflight as the go-to expansion to come out complaining about FOMO?
Wut?
FOMO is the main topic now. Well i guess people where fine with it. I was fine with it as well. When i changed to US servers and had to start from scratch kinds missed those shiny things.
I had to do3 pathfinders in original state 2 times XD
Was never fine with it, obviously I’ll be less fine with it when they’re adding more.
Keep challenging or tedious rewards challenging I got no problem with that but don’t put a time limit on them.
There are too many things to do in game I don’t want to have to always do the timed content because it has a reward I like when I’d rather do something else for now and come back to do it 3 weeks later.
The only challenge being added by time limit is “I was there”. “Being there” is not a skill you need to practice and develop through trial and error.
There’s been a FOMO event, and another one’s coming soon.
I typically don’t chime in on whether not things should be brought back anymore, but to answer your question, it’s because it’s the first expansion I’ve played a whole season of let alone 3 seasons of (as an adult). While obviously that doesn’t answer for everybody, I think my reason is pretty sensical.
because the last good cosmetic rewards were in legion - so now, three expansions, later and we haven’t gotten anything comparable yet, people want the good stuff from MoP cmodes, etc.
Because Dragonflight was so good, posters are grasping at straws for something to criticize to look cool and gain attention.
It’s quite obvious the way they ignore the facts in the matter, including what FOMO actually is.
It is not greed for more or the fear of not having every little thing, it is:
Video games
People want to be a part of the in-group and feel like they belong, making them fear missing out on being part of the in-group. People do not want to feel like they are missing out of being part of the belonging group with respect to video games, which causes a video game addiction. When people align their social identities with the video game they are playing, they fear that not playing enough will outcast them from the group they are playing with, leading to the fear of missing out on being a dedicated member of the community.
Within video games, FOMO is also used to describe the similar anxiety around missing the ability to obtain in-game items or complete activities that are only available for a limited time, such as those in battle passes. This is particularly common for multiplayer video games, where such items are cosmetic in nature but reflect a player’s skill to other players in the game and can become a sign of social standing within the game’s community; wherein failure to acquire a limited cosmetic item may lead to social outcasting.
Re: Wikipedia
I guess more people have started to notice it is all, since the game does seem to rely more on fomo now than it has in the past. Or at least there are more examples it now than there were originally.
I wanna say… Since mop? The game has relied more on fomo for player retention and engagement than in cata and older.
Outside of the pvp realm, there’s only been a few examples of fomo in cata and older expacs. I think in vanilla there was just the AQ mount and title?
I’m curious as to what people think they might “miss out” on if they don’t partake in the upcoming Pandalands event?
Don’t want/need to level an alt character fast? Not missing out on anything.
Don’t want/need any transmogs or mounts from Pandaland? Not missing out on anything, and can still be obtained anyway after the event ends.
So where’s the FOMO here?
Maybe its too much back to back for some people?
Personally im not too bothered by “fomo” so long as the items either arent a complete one of a kind, or tied directly in to an rp fantasy in this game.
And character customisation as a fomo reward is right out.
I don’t think many have ever been okay with limited time content and rewards.
Fomo, like Bogo, was a buzz word created by literal market experts to trick you into buying things you dont need nor want.
Fomo is fake just like bogo is fake: the cost of both are baked into the first product, and Fomo is just the attacking of low self esteeem and poor self control.
There is no such thing as actual fomo. Not a single one of yall are actually having a physical reaction to the point where your fight/flight response activates. Not a single one of yall are actually feeling fear, you are feeling want.
Because with the availability of all the tools and information in the modern game space “I don’t know what to do” is no longer a reason for not being good at the game, this has created a culture in which gamers feel the need to have all the lucrative things as well as an enhanced desire to be good at the game itself.
I probably don’t understand FOMO well, but can anyone think of an example of it from BfA?
Because people have discovered that you can use it as a buzzword, and it makes people irrationally angry.
I already got the perfect transmog and mount combo for my character.
Fomo doesn’t affect me any longer.
Now if they released a new, up to date model SMOOTH barrel gun like the one I have then I might be tempted.
It’s the latest outrage fad. Kind of like “borrowed power” was.
And it aligns with the equality of outcome crowd that seem to want the whole game to be a Skinner box. Press button get loot.
I think because initially it was just the occasional little thing here or there, but these days it’s a major strategy that companies use to manipulate players, much like rep grinds, initially they were just a thing that completionists grinded away so they could buy a mount or random epic item, now Blizzard uses reps to gate content and manipulate how we manage our playtime and what content we participate in.
Silence is not complacency.
