Gnomes are curious. Of course that curiosity can be a way for them to mess with dark magic.
Also I would imagine a small race would enjoy having large demons to act as servants.

Oh, it’s simply their curiosity! I’m running a gnomish warlock in classic - and apparerntly being a warlock in gnomeragan used to be just a commonplace thing, treated on the same level as being a mage or a priest. Magic is magic, and if you can do some good with it, there ya go!
Of course after the incident, they were launched into the…shall we say…underdeveloped civilizations of the dwarves and humans. The dwarves are incredibly suspicious of magic after the whole dark iron dwarf fiasco, and the humans just hate anything not light affiliated. In fact I think a lot of gnomish warlocks’ disregard for life is more because of the discrimination they faced, rather than the actual effects of fel magic. They’re super careful with it…but geniuses can still get their buttons pushed.
Cause they’re sooooooooo cute <3
I have a mechagnome warlock her silver appendages help her summon demons.
Too bad they’re overshadowed by the human (potential) mages.
Gnomes can be warlocks?!?!
Who’d they pay off?
Seems so wrong, like a Vulpera DK…
Because they’re crazy enough to experiment on everything.
It’s really not. The lore does tell us they’re some of the most powerful casters in the world.
Gnomes are for a most part practical race.
Gnomes are small and weaker, summoning Demons and having overwhelming power can be helpful in a wide big world.
I understand they are powerful mages but warlocks are a different class and life force. GNOME just don’t seem to fit the mold, my opinion, sorry.
I have a gnome warlock. There’s something about the “you didn’t see that coming” juxtaposition of a small, friendly gnome wielding demonic power, unafraid of something dark like that. It’s the “those don’t go together” that makes it so appealing.
There’s nothing practical about it. It’s the very impracticality of it–the perversity of a kindly gnome enslaving demons and using them to nuke cities. I mean…this ain’t rocket science. The fact that it doesn’t fit is the reason it fits.
I don’t know, when I think “what class fits gnome best”, my mind immediately goes to “Football”, but that’s probably just me.
Warlock in general is more of a Horde thematic class. They use them because they’re useful and served as a counter to Alliance Mages.
Though Blizzard seems to have ditched the idea of faction and class fantasy entirely.
Exactly thank you!
They’re potent casters. And where did Warlocks came from? Many of them are former Mages who delved into darker magics.
Also: there’s a couple well known NPCs and 7 warlock trainers are Gnomes. The only higher number of Warlock trainers is Human.
I’m sorry I don’t follow Alliance Lore, but GNOME warlocks just seem wrong on my book. Just because they are classified as caster’s dont make it right. Mages yes, warlocks no.
I think Surta has it correct.
Why is anything a thing in the lore?
Because Blizzard wrote that it is.
I find it ironic that someone who plays a race that is canonically from an alternate timeline’s past is complaining that the lore doesn’t make sense.
Gnomes are intelligent. Fel and Arcane magic require certain amounts of intelligence and self-control, varying between each one respectively, in order to wield. Gnomes are really smart and good at self control. Therefore they can understand and harness something as chaotic and destructive as fel magic. So much so that they are known as the best summoners in the world. Sure some of them die from it but not always and the summonings they perform alone, other warlocks won’t even try in groups.
It’s not wrong. There’s no difference between a Mage and a Warlock except for what school of magic they pull from. So yes, it is correct.
Warlocks are magical practitioners that seek to understand darker magics, among other fel-based and destructive spells.
Both Alliance and Horde did the same thing.
Sometime after the Third War, the Alliance and the Horde began pressing warlocks into their service.[12][13] Although many societies consider such dark arts disreputable, their efficacy in combat is undeniable.
