Why Is Chat So Quiet?

Of course in the cities there is spam galore. Outside of the trade hubs utter silence and crickets… I find it so odd. I have been playing WoW for 20 years and chat has always been so lively. Am I just an old fart and this is the new norm?

Seems to be the new norm. I’ve been keenly aware of this for a while now, and it’s definitely a stark contrast from the old days.

I am connected to many other realms, I think we are 11 in total, and it is normally very quiet in the open world.

I am chatty, but even I stay quiet most of the time as you rarely get a reply.

We all are my friend!

Most chat in trade degenerates to political arguing these days from what I’ve seen. I guess people just avoid it entirely now.

Yeah, it is hit and miss for sure. Always a bummer when no one responds to something fun.

yes . …bliz required nom nom

Simple answer, if they don’t have something nice to say, they don’t say anything at all. If they did, it could probably be reported and actioned against.

Few of them took a vacation today.

So the trolls are waiting for who will post the next steamy topic and take the bait.

So they can jump in and comment.

As of now no wants to challenge daddy Blizzard forum keepers.

average wow player is so anti-social they drove away the trolls that enriched their lives

Mine is mostly silent because I have an addon muting profession spam, carry advertising, common troll topics, and anything with the word pst in it, so that cuts most chatter out for me

Chat outside of major cities has almost always been quiet unless something was going on with PvP.

The exception was the old barrens chat of vanilla. Of course that was lively, and there were a few reasons that the Barrens specifically was a unique zone with a crazy chat. There’s a reason Barrens Chat became a thing.

I don’t think most players with friends use the in game chat. They’re all on Discord. I never even glance at the window unless I hear the chime that I got a new PM.

Gen Z is mailing it in. Back in my day thr Barrens chat was electric. Now youve got your idiotic Discord channels.

Ever been in a group lately? People don’t even acknowledge each others existence. No “nice group” anymore, no “thanks for group”, no nothing. We get in, do the dungeon, get out - with saying as little as humanly possible. Lol. So strange. (Also 19yr long player who’s experienced this very same decline)

Pretty much this. I think a growing number of the general gaming community has checked out in engaging with other players except where absolutely forced to and instead is engaging with social activities on platforms like Discord. With cross realm stuff now you even have discord communities dedicated to organizing group content outside the traditional boundaries of guilds.

Dorn chat is surprisingly lively tbh

Because I don’t need to talk to you or anyone else while playing.

Back in the day, I used in-game chat to fill the time. Now, I have my discord chat going plus whatever music/youtube video/netflix show I’m watching.

It’s been that way in LFG chat on my server for years. It’s literally the same names trolling politics for 5+ years. No idea how they can keep going this long.

You can tell people want to chat and be social, but once that gets going for a bit, the political trolls can’t help themselves and overwhelm the chat. I hate it.

Ill respond to people. And Ill even do shout outs. I just stopped expecting responses years ago. There isnt a community anymore. Not when you are a shard away from never seeing/hearing someone again

Yeah very true, the sharding tore this game to pieces, when I first started I’d see the same players questing, we started forming a group, it was very cool, we would raid Southshore and Darkshore often and kept recognizing players that tagged along, so we went from group to guild pretty quickly.

None of that would happen today.
