I just did a tier 8 delve and… my great vault rewards are only 584 - tier 1
presumably because I’ve chosen to partake in other world content this week
this just feels like I’m being punished for doing more content in the game

You need to do 2 tier8 delves. If you hadn’t done that world content, that slot would have been empty.

Your vault slots are based on the 2nd, 4th, and 8th hardest world content thing you do each week.
Do 8 delves, get 3 delve slots.
Do 1 delve and 1 world event, get a single world event slot.
Do 3 delves and 5 world events, get 1 delve slots and 2 world event slots.
Do 8 delves and 2 world events, get 3 delve slots.

that just seems a bit silly to say you have to do 2 before you can get a vault reward.
I don’t have to do 2 dungeons to earn a vault reward.
delves are just shorter dungeons with silly mechanics.’
I guess it’s fine it’s not a big deal.
I just don’t like situations where you can do content and then it doesn’t end up mattering.

You do have to do 2 raid bosses though. If anything dungeons is the outlier.
Well that’s going to happen for the later vault slots regardless. It’s 2, 4, 8. So there’s going to be runs you finish that don’t unlock extra vault.

Your perception of what has happened is incorrect. You wouldn’t have any vault reward if you didn’t have the rank 1 reward.
You aren’t being punished for doing more content, you are being proportionally reward for doing the level of content that was completed.

it’s not a big deal I just did another delve just now
I don’t feel the rewards are proportional. I should be able to slowly fill a bar from doing world quests, outdoor activities, etc that will eventually add up to being equivalent to doing 2 delves.
or do some combination of other outdoor activities plus 1 delve.
I don’t know if that makes sense.

It does equal a delve of the same difficulty. A tier 1.
If we are honest none of the activities that contribute to that vault track outside of delves have even a slight bit of difficulty.
Delves themselves are easy but the higher tiers are far more difficult than world quest or the awaken machine. Those activities being on par with a low tier delve is quite fair.

It’s based on the difficulty of the thing you do, not the amount of things you do. Then you get a slot for the 2nd, 4th, and 8th hardest things.

Being sent to your room with no supper is punishment. Going to prison for tax evasion is punishment. “The magic elf video game doesn’t give me pixel gear that’ I want” is not punishment.

They do punish you for doing more content, but that’s usually through explicit and hidden earning caps.
This is misunderstanding a bad interface.
You get rewarded for the lowest of your top 2 delves, lowest of your top 4 delves, and the lowest of your top 8 delves.
And weekly quests count as T1 delve.
So if you do one T8 delve and 7 weekly quests, your top two delves are T8 for the delve and T1 for the weekly quest. The T1 is the lowest.
And there’s no in game way to tell where you’re at with this.

But you have to do two raid boss kills to get a reward in that vault row. Isn’t M+ the oddball that should require two M+ runs to get the first vault slot (I’m not advocating for that, just pointing out that it’s easier than Delves or Raid to get 1st slot).

It says on the slot what you have to do in order to increase the ilvl of the reward.

I play for fun, so it all matters to me.
Only if you haven’t already acquired a reward in that slot, otherwise it doesn’t tell you anything besides “Do more stuff to upgrade this”.
