You mean corporate america where there are millions and millions making a good living working at. They cut 10% so the 90% can stay employeed. Thats good business.
CEO runs the company and makes big decisions for companies survival and profitability. Those getting let go are probably easily replaceable with automation or outsourcing. Blizz did the right thing to save the company.
Since when is laying off 8% of your work force the same as “firing everyone”? Companies will frequently remove under performing product lines or jobs that they feel are not needed. That is what they did and the resources freed up with be used to help strengthen those that remained. I am a little disappointed this hit a CM here…
Layoffs happen, but doing so after giving the new CFO a 15 million dollar hiring bonus (which is probably more than the total salary of all those layoffs) is pretty tactless.
The CEOs want another house.
Most of it wasn’t cash, though. Most was in stock options that are only worth anything if the company does well, which in turn means he needs to do well. None of it is guaranteed money and most of that $15 mill he doesn’t even have right now.
Here’s a green post from a few days ago explaining it better - CFO bonus and lay offs - #10 by Bluspacecow-muradin
So the higher ups can afford to give themselves raises
You know the community management team was… well, a team, and not just one guy… right? It’s not like Ythisens was some kind of single-handed paragon of all that was right and good.
That certainly clears up a lot of the initial shock, but even a 3.2 million dollar hiring bonus is still astonishing to a company that’s trying to consolidate.
Because of corporate greed. Blizzard’s/Activison’s profits weren’t great enough and as a sign to of good faith to the stockholders they sacrificed 800 of their employees for them. Executives and stockholder profits above all else.
You didn’t buy enough store mounts…
Only if they were a full-time employee. Part-time or temp works get nothing.
Oh absolutely, but at the same time, we see so little real communication from so much of that team. Ythisens was one of the ones that we actually -saw-.
I love your Kermit the frog memeness. Always a good time.
Out of likes right now though.
CEO runs company into the ground… people get fired company dies and gets sold off. CEO gets big parachute payment and gets a big bonus to join another company he can screw into the ground. Seen it happen too often!
But thats not the norm and blizzavision isnt doing that,… Dont throw the baby out with the bath water.
Only because he was the point guy for the team. They’ll have another one, and then we’ll talk mostly with that person.
Most of the CMs’ work is gathering information to feed to the devs. They don’t need to be hugely visible to do that, and in fact it’s usually better if they aren’t - if they let concerns bubble up naturally rather than getting everyone distracted by the shiny blue posts.
they got record breaking profits so to celebrate they are firing everyone
Modern capitalism at work. Set expectations to ridiculous levels, get record profits but not meet expectations…but still record profits, fire 800 people so you get a stock boost and the board is happy, rehire a new group of people paying less than you were paying the previous 800 people, say you feel badly for having to let people go and while eating lobster n steak plan out your opulent and early retirement thanks to the hard work of the thousands you have laid off over the years.
