Why is Blizz afraid to give out subscription numbers?

After all this time they still don’t want to show how many people are playing.

Blizz knows MMO gamers are extremely pessimistic.

Because it serves no purpose, except to be used against them. Most games won’t give you actually subscriber numbers. I mean even that often flaunted FFXIV numbers is total all time subscribers, and not their actually currently active ones.

If you want to know the number of people playing, sub numbers wouldnt be an accurate measuring stick. Plenty of people have multiple subs (not me). Sub numbers would just be a way of measuring Blizzard’s monthly (and yearly) gross take. Even Blizzard cant be sure of exactly how many actual people are playing the game.

Likely the same reason no MMORPG gives out their sub numbers these days; bragging about subs ain’t important to Corporate.

Subs dropping: “See this game is dying LUL”

Subs increased: “it’s because of classic lul no one is really playing BfA”

“Note that this is the last quarter that we plan to provide subscriber numbers,” the company said. “There are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance.”

That is what they said back then.

Because between people buying game time with tokens and people playing on the starter version, subscriptions aren’t really a good gauge of how many people are actually playing.

Also, subs don’t take into account, new expac purchases (regular, upgraded, deluxe), store purchases (mounts, skins), services (realm transfers, 120 boost which is $60), purchase of tokens to sell for in game gold… Original retail didn’t really have all the extra services we have now, so subs was a bit more spot on. Now a days, number of subs means nothing.

Because they often keep mentioning that subs do not show the game’s success, the micro transactions do, which is why they focus on whales rather than making WoW a more accessible game and instead focus on removing stuff so they keep them hooked and never leave.

How would this information help you?

Because they never recovered from the “no flying going forward” from WoD. After that incident they stopped reporting sub numbers because so many people left because of how flying was mishandled.

My my look at the White Knight coming in fast and ferocious. It’s okay white knight I’m just asking a question that’s all.

You can stand down now.

This is how you know the question was asked to troll.

Anyone that has a follow up that isn’t immediately bashing Blizzard, is a white knight.
