Removing RP-PvP server was a mistake.
Removing PVP servers in general was a mistake.
Honestly I quit RP over a decade ago but still am on Moon Guard just because it’s huge and has a good AH (also I’m cheap and don’t want to pay to transfer characters).
I’m sick of most RP being hook-up oriented OR boring turn-based events where you stand around and roll virtual dice and then pretend something actually happened. RP used to be a lot more dynamic back in ye olden days, now it’s just a stage play.
I’m long over the drama too. Not all RPers have issues, but a plurality of them do and I’m not in a game to be someone’s personal therapist.
FFXIV’s community is even WORSE and it’s not close. That game’s “RP scene” is a cesspool of some of the must f-ed up crap I’ve ever witnessed. I’m over it.
i’m in this thread and i don’t like it
I can appreciate the turn based stuff I see in larger events, especially because trying to write a custom response incorporating every single person in a 40 man raid is exhausting, but I definitely felt a bit of whiplash coming over from SWTOR when I found out some public events are basically just RPing with yourself. I attended a few Dalaran events based on recent, uh, happenings and threw in a few posts of my character pretty blatantly stealing things. Nobody paid attention.
I’m not even sure people read each others’ posts anymore. Those things are like doing follower dungeons…Or follower raids, whatever the attendee count may be.
The cope and seethe in me wonders if it’s partially because of Blizzard - making quick, cartoonish, jokey stories that aren’t really grounded in lore and you get players who are mostly interested in quick, cartoonish, jokey stories that aren’t really much interested in lore grounding.
“Look at me! I’m better than you! I’m so better than you in fact, I spent 25 dollars to be further away from you in a video game! I’m so better than you I’m on the forums, letting you KNOW that I’m better than you, because I AM BETTER THAN YOU. LISTEN TO ME, I’M BETTER THAN YOU!!! I’M BETTER THAN YOU PLEASE JUST LISTE-”

well, i am glad you found a new server that you like.
fortunately for the people remaining on the server, we are free to make our experiences what we want to make of it. seems everything worked out for everyone. good luck on your future adventures.
“you appear to be in need of a master…”
wheeze
It’s fascinating how that dude is a legend across multiple games now.
this line singlehandedly got my buddy to uninstall SWTOR when we first played it together
he was in game for all of 10 minutes and got that message, instantly said “yknow, nevermind” in our voice chat and left lmao
There are times in life that one needs to look within themselves in hopes to find the answer to the problem at hand, this is seemingly one of those times.
Sometimes at large events it can be hard to follow everyone’s posts, but one other thing to consider is that antagonistic RP (even mild antagonistic RP like theft) is not always everyone’s cup of tea. A lot of people are pretty averse to RP-PvP, or things that could potentially lead into RP-PvP, since it’s easy for IRL tensions to manifest and bleed into OOC when things don’t go the way someone was hoping. A lot of people have been in bad RP-PvP experiences where neither side was willing to allow their character to lose the encounter, even if the IC consequences to losing were mild, so a lot of RPers do intentionally avoid and ignore those situations when they present themselves.
That’s why I don’t like huge turn-based events or public events in general. Everyone’s too busy doing their own little bit in the scripted play, and if you’re an outsider trying to just RP , good luck, no one’s paying attention because it’s not in the script/hasn’t been rolled on.
Back in vanilla, we had a “large” RP guild of about 80 people on Cenarion Circle. We resolved RP conflicts with /random once in a while, but a lot of things were much more spontaneous and there was no script. Whatever happened, happened (within reason of course, we still had rules against godmodding, forced deaths, that kind of thing). Our groups we RP’ed in were much smaller, too, usually 10 folks or less, but it was a much much friendlier, better, more interesting way to tell stories than…wtf-ever it’s been for a good long while now.
I just have -zero- interest in ERP or standing around doing dice rolls waiting for my “turn” in the script.
Honestly, I’ve been feeling the same way. I’ve said it time and time again that sitting around in Stormwind isn’t beneficial. But you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. The drama is also why I cut out a lot of server projects.
I honestly hate HATE public events in Stormwind. There’s too many people, emotes get lost, and honestly the subject matter of the public events don’t make sense since the Regent Lord literally is the High Exarch of the Army of Light. Markets are fine. But ultimately should be more first aid classes, and how to defend yourself. More slice of life type events. But everyone only cares about rogue undead attacking the city for whatever stupid reason like it’s wotlk or shadowlands pre patch. Or all the gunsh*ts. Things that aren’t really lore friendly but after the last couple hundred attacks, it starts to ruin your immersion.
The other thing that honestly ruins rp is how the community handles any sort of criticism. It’s usually someone going on about how you’re the one that needs to change and not that anyone of the community decides to be that change. Or just blatantly attacking people for airing out their dislikes in a thread. It comes off as very cultish. And becomes a massive turnoff.
I miss the days when it was about stories and not events TBH. I used to have a good time reading the stories people would post on various guild and official server forums. Now it’s all just Discord garbage and dice events or ERP
For my time in wra I remember the first guild I liked was Court of the Falling Stars. My first ever story event with them was a vacation in Boralus as the group had survived accidentally hoing through the Whispers of N’Zoth and it had a toll on everyone. It was a vacation that quickly turned into a mystery. It was a D20 adventure that took us from Boralus to Crystalsong Forest. I will never forget that but it was fun.
D20 events can be fun if its not constantly combat events. Like when I was in Brighthaven we had a D20 event where we gathered herbs. Order of the Ivory Flame had an event where we built fortifications toprotect a village from Gnolls.
Now the public events I mentioned are emotes where you run the risk of missing peoples emotes or just straight power playing your character because everyone has main character syndrome. At least rolling a d20 is more accurate. I know people again have a problem with it because their main character cant have a bad day but…
I’m neurodivergent with a bad case of dyspraxia. My coordination and motor skills are bad. I live life like iI rolled consecutive 1’s with the amount of times I’ve tripped over things, ran into things, and dropped things all on accident. Sometimes your character has bad luck. Sometimes they have consistent bad luck. I take my 1’s in style and laugh about it. Much like i would when I’m tripping over nothing and tam my hand into a wall on accident. I roll with it.
It has nothing to do with “character has a bad day” for me and has a lot more to do with how tedious, scripted, and boring it is to waste literally hours of my time waiting for a massive group of people to remember whose turn it is to roll to see if they kicked that rock or not.
/Random by level cap used to work just fine in ye olden days for those things.
YMMV but the reason I don’t RP anymore is: too much ERP/hook up being the only goal, most RP is centered around scripted dice events which I find tedious, as is standing around Stormwind doing “slice of life” stuff with one sentence responses about how the weather is.
I just don’t have the time or patience for this stuff anymore. If and when people get back to long-form writing and more dynamic RP, we’ll see. But I think that era is as gone as the golden era of the internet itself.
Honestly if I wabted long form rp, I’d go back to role-playing on tumblr or a forum. I don’t think that an mmo played by hundreds if not thousands of people is applicable especially when theres more than just you rping.
Long form is more for 1 on 1 type rping in a controlled environment when theres not many people within your vicinity.
My criticism with the standard d20 approach is that, from what I’ve seen, it’s an all-or-nothing system, which I find makes absolutely no sense.
Let’s say, you have a player, and they and their character have been in a guild for years, across multiple campaigns, etc… we’re talking about someone with proven experience. Why should this person’s every action be an automatic failure just because they rolled a 10 instead of an 11?
Degrees of success/failure is the system I prefer, but I’ve never really seen it. The idea that for every value of 5 you deal 1 point of damage or heal 1 point of HP, is one that seems reprehensible to DMs I’ve met. Imagine rolling a 1 and instead of skewering throughself through the left eyesocket, your veteran just deals the enemy a glancing blow? So much more realistic. I do also believe in outright failure, and I believe that should be left to the player to determine.
My only other criticism with the d20 system is, once you have a certain number of people, you may as well stop emoting/rp’ing. People are more worried about what they individually rolled, scrolling through an ocean of rolls in the chat box to hunt it down, and then typing out their own emotes, that by the time the, ‘turn,’ is over, they won’t have read a single emote from another person. Certainly the DM won’t have time, trying to keep all the math straight on who has how many Hit Points, and which enemies suffered what damage.
It’s really easy. Because Lady Luck in that moment is a fickle mistress and hates them. Though in most systems, a 10 signifies a draw. So it’s not really an automatic failure. It’s a “they went gripped the pommel of their sword, rushed at the enemy intending to strike but only meant blade for blade in a stalemate.” Orrrrrrr “They rushed at the enemy and in the nick of time slide underneath the enemy’s broadsword to avoid getting hit. Though now they’re covered in mud, but hey at least they still have their head.” Orrrrrrr…“The ground was slick with rain and when they rushed forward they slipped in the mud and fell face first into it. Luckily the mud cushioned their fall so they didn’t render themselves unconscious.”
See how I turned that from uwu failure to “aha I lived to tell the tale!” Or "My friends at the tavern aren’t going to believe was happened. We’ll all drink and pint and laugh about this later. " And in the case that a 10 reflects losing a health point. Oh no. They get lose some blood? Which can look like “They rushed towards the enemy, not realizing there was an archer behind them, had they been quicker, could have dodged but now they took an arrow to the back.” Or “They saw the archer and tried to dodge but ended up tripping over a rock and fell down spraining their wrist from trying to break their fall.”
I’ve been a guild officer, co-gm and gm of a guild. My luck still sucks when it comes to rolls but I take the bad rolls with a certain grace. I look at it as character development for my character. It’s not a failure, but it’s a growing point. Raina Grennith who has been my main has normally set herself on fire on accident when I’ve rolled 1’s. Instead of having a staff on her back, she wields a rapier and a book much like a Red Mage from Final Fantasy XIV. I also have a hunter version for her where she wields a bow and channels magic to set her arrows on fire through enchantments. I use the failures to think outside of the box and think about how can I improve her character story. What will she do to rise above this adversity. She often fights against people larger than her or gets slashed at by claymores. Maybe wearing plate armor and learning how to use an axe would be more beneficial to her? She keeps setting herself on fire on accident, maybe switching to more arcane based magic might help with that. She keeps tripping on things? Maybe lighter chainmail might help?
I’ve rolled 1’s to where at one point my character tripped over a log and proceeded to knock herself out completely. Hell the last couple of campaigns in my guild I have rolled 1’st. Did I cry about it? No, I laughed. Everyone laughed. I had 2 hp, and with the 1 it went to -6. I spent most of the time knocked unconscious and was just laughing. It was hilarious. Luckily she was healed, and everyone decided to let me have the kill shot where I just destroyed a goblin’s shredder with a wrench and turned him into a sheep. Cause we needed him alive. The campaign after she practically drowned.
You have to remember that actions have consequences. A glancing blow is only accurate in a draw scenario. When I’ve rolled 1’s with Raina and her magic completely backfires, she acquires new burns, and I would lose an additional health point because it would make more sense since she’s you know…being burned alive accidentally. Again a critical 1 doesn’t mean you have your hand chopped off but means you got cut so deeply that you’re losing a lot of blood and if your character is at 0 hp then they pass out and are bleeding profusely. Not yet dead, but are going to be if someone doesn’t heal them and SOON.
I also don’t rp on that character for a while so that way they just heal up and I focus on an alt or content. I think the larger issue is that people just seem really entitled and again have major main character syndrome. Then again before I started rping on WoW, I rped on forums where you asked consent from everyone involved and that included what kind of consequences are appropriate.
