San’layn are a specific case of Blood Elves turned into Vampyr.
But Blood Elves aren’t the only Vampyr around. We’ve seen Human Vampirates, Vrykul Vampyr and even a Gnome Vampyr in Hearthstone!
So here’s what I think:
If we got San’layn as an Allied Race, we would have Blood Elf Vampyr. And that’s cool.
But if we could unlock Vampyr customization by aligning ourselves with the Venthyr in Shadowlands, we could be Vampyr of ANY RACE, including Blood Elf Vampyr!
And I think that’s better.
The end.

I love goth and vampires and especially goth vampires.
But they are customization if anything.

Yeah, they misspelled Thegn
Well going by that logic, void elves are just moody blood elves and that’'s cool.
But they should have just added the void elves customization if you side with the void hehe
I’m honestly not convinced Void Elves should have been an Allied Race either. Or Lightforged Draenei, for that matter. They could easily have been customization options like the Night Warrior Night Elves, leaving the slots open for proper new races.

Lot of allied races work like that, should they have added them as customization probably. Do they make more money out of it if they make it a standalone race? Yes, so the choice was simple.

Do they, though? I’m not convinced.
If Blizzard decided to shift the focus in Shadowlands from Allied Races to new Customization for the Old Races, maybe investing on the characters we already have is more profitable on the long run, as we are more likely to continue subbing if we get cool stuff for the characters we are already attached to.
That’s just speculation, but we can’t know for sure because we don’t have the actual data.

I just want my DK to look like this
It’s not because we don’t have the raw data that we can’t make an estimate. It’s been said before by Bellular with internal Blizzard info that they don’t care as much for subs as before. And with current tools letting you estimate population and seeing how expansions still manage to do as good if not better than before, they have been making a lot more money on services/shop items.
It’s only logicial to think that adding new races will cause some people to race change for them. They even made a timed special to reduce race change cost after releasing kultirans and zandalaris because they knew a lot of people would do it.
I’d be honest, the only problem I have with San’alyn is I feel it’s more a class than a race, a bit like you’re hinting by saying that it could be a customization for multiple races. I’m also not fan of it because I feel blood dks could just fulfill that theme, a bit why I’m not really on the necromancer train. We already have something that is 90% like it.
Could they make it work with covenant as customization option? Maybe at some point with the abilities the covenant are gonna give, we haven’t seen how many of them work.
I definitely still want them as an allied race & not just as a customization option. More San’layn themed environments the more enjoyable for us San’layn lovers.
Vampyr should be a class. Everyone turns into a vampire when bitten by a vampyr

You can’t give moose antlers to humans or dwarves or trolls.
It’s odd
Void tentacles should have been a class available to all races
Lightforging should have been opened to all races willing
While I agree with the concept, something tells me that the customization options we get for aligning with the venthyr won’t be as extensive as you might think. My concern is that it’ll be a case of “too much work to retrofit this onto all playable models.”
I mean, just look at what happened with the nightborne

As it stands, most of the non-major characters (aka anyone who isn’t blood royalty like lana’thel, dreven, etc) just use blood elf DK skins with red eyes.
So they should just give DKs red eyes. Or add it to Blood Elves if they ever add Dark Ranger skins to them.
That gnome made me forever hate the idea of ever getting vampire as a customization…
100% agree although a small part of me dreads giving vampire access to everyone
It’s a cool idea, and I would love to see that, but I don’t know how you would do that without overlapping with existing customization/appearances for some races. For example, let’s say Venthyr gave us customization for red eyes, fangs and claws. But how does that work on say, a male worgen, that can already have red eyes, fangs and claws? Likewise for the other covenants, which would also need their own options. If going Kyrian lets you turn blue, what if you’re already blue?
Omg I just imagine it rn, pandaren but with long vampire teeth haha
It would be great if the covenants gave us more actual customization in those areas
