Why I HATE Faeline Stomp and How to Fix It

(From the perspective of a Mistweaver)

Let me start with the things I like about Faeline Stomp (FLS)

  • It triggers Ancient Teachings. This is important because we don’t always want to fully channel an essence font just to keep our buff up. FLS is cheaper and instant, which is nice! This also enables Fistweavers to take Upwelling. Because FLS triggers Ancient Teachings, we can let Essence Font sit on cooldown until we need its healing. Combined with TFT and Font of Life, this creates a really nice flow for the spec. :+1:
  • It unlocks Ancient Concordance (AC) and Awakened Faeline (AF) that boost our DPS and synergize with Ancient Teachings. More options for Fistweaving is cool :+1:

Now here are the reasons I hate it

  • It doesn’t look like a monk ability. If you showed me this ability and asked me which class it belongs to, I would tell you it belongs to none of the classes available in WoW. This ability was specifically themed for the Night Fae, which not every monk was a part of, and not every new monk will even visit. :-1:
  • It restricts you to standing on a line which begins on you. This restricts your movement in the backwards direction (if you backpedal, you’re no longer in the line), and it encourages you to turn 60º before stomping to retain optimal mobility around a boss. This feels clunky. :-1:
  • It’s a ground effect. Perhaps this is a necessary restriction for balance or class fantasy reasons, but literally the only benefit you get from fighting in FLS is another refresh of Ancient Teachings… if you’re lucky. If you take AC/AF, your benefits increase, but you could have just as easily given us Shadowboxing Treads as a talent and NOT tie it to this clunky ability. :-1:

Here are some ways this ability could be improved. These wouldn’t necessarily have to be implemented together – I would be happy to see ANY of these things happen.

  • Low Effort Color Fix: Change its name and recolor it to jade. Give us a glyph to return the Night Fae colors for the people who like its current look.
  • Quality of Life Fix: Get rid of the reset mechanic and give FLS a 12-15 second cooldown. This would give us more flexibility in high movement scenarios, and a 15 second cooldown aligns perfectly with Ancient Teachings. *A new effect would have to be created to justify standing in it.
  • Ground Effect Redesigned: Make it a Chi Stomp and have it place down a circle (centered slightly in front of you and maximum range similar to the current FLS) instead of a line. This would give you MUCH more freedom of movement, but still restricts you to fighting on a ground zone. (Sometimes restrictions are healthy, I get it)
  • Complete Redesign: Give us a different ability to activate Ancient Teachings, replace Ancient Concordance with Shadowboxing Treads, and make Awakened Faeline into a passive effect which doesn’t require you to stand in a ground effect.

In conclusion, I appreciate having a new way to refresh Ancient Teachings, but I hate that it’s Faeline Stomp. Thank you for your time.

+1. Like the idea, mechanically speaking, but it’s not thematic in the slightest and definitely needs a few QoL updates, cause it feels horrendously clunky right now.

When you cast it, it doesn’t have blue directly beneath your feet -but iirc it still counts as ‘in’ the faeline, even, which is just…c’mon. It needs more polish.

That said, I do kind of like the reset mechanic - it adds some variability into the rotation that a 15 sec cooldown wouldn’t, and back to back procs can put out some really satisfying AoE healing/damage. I do have a bit of a love-hate relationship with RNG though, so I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea (it certainly isn’t mine all the time, either).

Yes please, I need the ability to look like a Monk spell.
They changed Mindgames animation to look shadowy, they really need to do this for all covenant spells that are returning.

I think some of your suggestions are excellent. I too hate the look of stomp - it really doesn’t fit the aesthetic of mw at all. The proc for stomp is largely useless. When pumping heals you are only going to be stomping to maintain the line to stand in. I’m not sure I agree with you about EF mana cost - using Rising mist to maintain EF you are going to cast it as soon as EF drops regardless of what healing the group needs.
I don’t think upwelling will be really used tbh.

maybe I’m misunderstanding. do you mean the ancient teachings proc?

The buff you want to maintain is EF itself for the double gusts. Teachings is conveniently the same duration as the EF buff if you spec rising mist. Stomp is just for the buff (fae line) every 30s or when you move. It isn’t worth casting every proc. Teachings is 100% up just from EF. Playing this way is super mana efficient.

While I don’t hate the idea of giving it a monk themed coat of paint, (I think there should be like 3x as many glyphs to customize spell effects) that spell looks so, so good.

Used it for a while but I don’t really care for it either. I’ve been using Rising Mist in keys and like it better.

My thought would be to uncouple the effects from the line completely.
Damage enemies in a cone in front (have the line as a standard visual effect rather then a continuing ground effect) and heal nearby allies. Then the reset mechanic would be just always active on the player.

Could use a cost reduction as well.

I was a rare weirdo who went NF with my monk and stayed that way, except to try out Kyrian for a couple of weeks. FLS was the whole reason I went NF. I saw from the beginning how fun it was going to be, and I pressed the crap out of that button every chance I got. Now I get to keep it?!?!?! HELL YEAH! I agree that it could use a cosmetic adjustment, but other than that, I vote leave it be.

Love this idea! On that note, can we get more glyphs in general? I feel like Monks really don’t have a lot of glyphs that give aesthetic changes to MW.

I’m just glad they kept it. It is super fun to stomp and am glad I can still stomp. I’m afraid to complain because they may remove it.

I do agree with the part about stepping backwards. I got into the habit of stepping back to stomp and then stepping forward again. If they could just extend the line behind the monk 1 step or 2 it would be nice

Agreed. However, the ability should be redesigned after Chi-Ji of the August Celestials, not Yu’lon. Should be a RED ground effect, since ATotM is the end-goal, and it’s the Chi-Ji school that OG eminence / FW’n (damage to heal) was designed after.

technically it was Yu’lon originally since eminence was part of serpent stance until WoD added Crane.

Visual effect aside, faeline stomp really needs 2 charges above all the other fixes mentioned. This single change would make it much more forgiving to move it/reset ancient teachings while still maintaining the game play loop of standing in faeline to get procs.

-as far as visuals i personally wish more monk spells had multiple glyph color options but i don’t know if the spell effects were built with that capability like more current mounts/armor are built for easy recoloring

I feel like we have to use Faeline though, since it is the ONLY talent that allows for sustainted AoE fistweaving. Personally I would prefer it if the “reset” proc didn’t require us to be fighting on the faeline. Because right now it is super punishing if you set it down for a trash pack but it doesn’t reset in time for the next pack.

You dont have to fully channel EF to get the buff. Just stop casting after half a second and buff appears

Costs 7%+ mana, which would be the main concern w/ using EF to just cast/cancel for ATotM

I hate it because it’s already being forced upon any MW by every guide/elitist as being the only viable build. Either nerf it if that is the case or buff/change other talents to make them more interesting picks.

Would love more glyph customizations!
