Ok, after many hours of trying to figure out why I can’t stand playing other classes, and putting a couple levels into Evoker, I realized the crutch that keeps me stuck to mage…portals to cities.
How the heck does anyone else get around in this game!?? I am so used to going wherever I need to for quest/item/thing, then just clicking teleport to get the heck out of there. When I try other classes I am lost. It’s like, “what I just walk back now?” then rummage through the bag and either hearthstone is on cooldown, or it’s bound to a city way further away than I want to be. Then BAM, I’m logging off and clicking mage again.
And that’s it, that’s why I can’t give up mage. I hate the playstyle and lack of Dev attention, but I’ll be darned if I can’t hop to Stormwind, then Ironforge, then Valdrakken, then Dalaran, then–etc. etc. in like 30 seconds. Can’t give it up.

yeah, portals are great, especially if you farm some old content.

It’s like a drug isn’t it? And then playing another class and going into a dungeon wondering “Where the f is my foo…ohhhhh right…”

Well that certainly used to be a factor but personally I no longer find the disparity between Mages and non-Mages to be that great. With the introduction of the portal rooms and the ability to have 3 hearthstones (regular, garrison, and Dalaran) moving around has never been easier. Really the only benefit I get as a Mage is being able to freely use my regular hearthstone as a quick travel point to an out of the way quest hub like Neltharus for example. There are a few clutch portals like to Old Dalaran for Alliance players since there is no other nearby access point to the heart of the Eastern Kingdoms or Stonard for Horde but that’s pretty minor. Yes, it’s annoying to have to portal hop and use Stormwind or Ogrimar like an airline hub but it’s a small inconvenience at worse.

When I was a lock in season 3 of SL, like everyone was, everytime I had to WALK OUT of a mechanic I wanted to die.

Honestly, as much as I love mage and it’s various benefits… I think I’m finally ready to swap.
I just can’t get behind Arcane this expansion. I’ve been working so hard to get a solid grasp of it, and it just isn’t clicking for me.
So I’m jumping ship to Evoker. I really like the gameplay and mobility of it.
I’ve mained Arcane exclusively since the beginning of WoD, but the “new hotness” factor of Evoker, combined with me disliking the current Arcane playstyle just seals it for me. I’m glad that 10.07 is coming in a couple days, that’ll give me a good way to catchup with my Evoker until the new raid hits.

I actually can’t remember the last time I left the expansions set of zones.
I think MoP… early WoD… I used to do some old ore farming, dungeons, a spot of world PVP.
Same goes for cities. Sometimes I’ll go to Org when I’m “forced”. I haven’t been to Thunder Bluff or Silvermoon in probably 5 years.

Don’t blame you. I was actually eyeing up Mage not long ago, but Arcane has become such a specific play style that just doesn’t seem appealing. Fire is virtually a dead spec. Frost is… cool (hehe) but not super engaging. I played Frost in Legion, I feel like it hasn’t changed any.
Ele Shaman plays like the true “sorcerer” spec these days.

The good thing about Warlock is that you don’t need to. They can face tank a lot of stuff and just keep DPSing, mitigating and healing passively.
With 3 hearthstones and portals being almost everywhere now, I see no reason to stick to mage purely for its portal prowess.
Besides, with main cities having almost all that you need, I see no reason to visit anything else, unless you’re running old raids and dungeons, but even then how often do you do those?
Sticking to mage just because it can save you some minutes of travel time isn’t really worth it in my opinion.

Besides portals there’s also double vanish, very handy when farming ore.
Food might be not as necessary as 10 years ago, but healers still take 4 stacks every time
And i really like iceblock as save ability. Not paladin bubble, but you have two of them as frost and they heal you.
And(2) blink is still amazing mobility tool
