And ever since then I’ve been class homeless having really no class feel that void in my heart.
I truthfully think the removal of life tap absolutely destroyed the class fantasy of warlock as a whole.
The main difference from when you play a mage and you play a warlock is a mage is the " good guy caster" you use your mana bar, you cast fire ball you freeze your enemies, well warlocks to help them fit that void reminiscent of a “Black deck” from magic the gathering. You not only use your mana bar but also used your health bar as a resource, what screams dark caster more then using your own life to inflict damage on your enemies.
This feeling is so apparently gone after you’ve played classic warlock and compare it to retail warlock.
Even the classic SoD tank warlock understand this concept where you’re literally life tapping while tanking (yes as a tank you’re killing yourself while tanking)
On retail you’re just a mage that’s slow, you don’t feel like a dark caster with a risk then reward playstyle you’re just a mage in a black robe.
Even in heroes of the storm (Guldan) and Hearthstone life tap and using your own life as a resource is a concept that helps the class stand apart from others.
If we look at hots we can compare Guldan to Jaina and Kael’thas, all 3 are immobile but Guldan doesn’t have “controlled” cc he has fear as an ultimate but know hard/ soft CC like the other comparison, what guldan does have is the ability to tank versus melee that other casters would die to( life drain build) or to simply fill the sustain ranged dps slot that no other mage unit fills due to his low Cooldowns of fel flame( since you need to life tap and drain life to have mana to keep spamming it like a ranged auto) and the absolute bonkers amount of damage a good corruption placed can do.
On retail
-It’s either random rot spreader,
-shoot fireball and random fire monster comes down
-demonology, which is just basically Affliction but instead of your dots being under their health bar they’re standing next to you and hitting the target. Demo on wotlk i feel great my felguard absolutely smacks hard asf, my shadowbolts slam and when soulfire procs im going to see the target be burned into nothing.
TL:DR:Blizzard destroyed warlock class fantasy and its been gone ever since.

Warlock feels more warlock than it ever did in classic era. Summoning demons, corrupting enemies, and raining down hellfire are what warlocks have done since the beginning and, surprise surprise, are the three specs that we have today, more fleshed out than ever.

Look at the source and it’s not that surprising. They also lied anyway. Clearly they started a new Warlock. And Check PvP shows they have an ilevel 392 Undead Warlock. So they definitely didn’t quit the class in Legion.

It’s even worse now that we know they lied about abandoning Warlock in Legion.
They also base the ‘core’ of a warlock around mana maintenance. Definitely not an opinion to take seriously by any means.
Leveling up a warlock in hopes they eventually fix its class fantasy.
Shadow priest can kill themselves with poor power word death presses and heal themselves back up with vamp presence.
If anything shadow priest catches this high risk high reward caster gameplay better than warlocks currently.
Losing metamorphasis is basically how warlock got 2 Affliction specs.
Affliction was damage over time
Destro was upfront damage
Demonology was in-between with big spikes then big drops, now it’s just Affliction with visually represented dots

I mean i actively main the class until it was gutted in Legion, don’t see how that’s a lie.
Was so hurt just quit Legion, came back to main Paladin/ Rogue in BFA, Mained mage in shadowlands and now I’m in dragonflight maining Evoker.
I guess the warlock you’re talking about the is draenei i needed to be decently powerful to do the manari questline
