Why High Elves Didn't Work - A Restrospective

Monsters are people too.

You’re a meanie. I’m not scum, just misunderstood. :sob:

Obtaining power even if by questionable means is something I thought a Blood Elf would understand.

Some times people get into a bubble where they are rewarded for tribal behavior. Though I don’t suspect that was her problem, exposure can be the only opportunity for feedback. it would be hypocritical of me to dismiss her without providing that opportunity.

Not everyone is surrounded on all sides by the Scourge…then again humans have produced two liche kings and their own fair share of mad wizards.

Did… did the gypsy kitsune really just use this as an insult? topkek

awww…That’s actually quite sweet. :smiley_cat:

Even in Warcraft 3 and in earlier novels that take place before the corruption of the Sunwell, High Elves had all sorts of different eye colors, including green and grey, blue was never their only eye color. Go play Warcraft 3/reforged and see for yourself.

Insisting that blue eyes define high elves is ultimately a very “purist” thing to imply, but hey if it’s head canon, its’ head canon and there’s nothing wrong with you Roleplaying.

Objectively speaking though and within the premise of the story, High elves have are not defined exclusively by blue eyes.

You know Blizzard employees are mad when they use their alt accounts to whinge and silence the people that are sick of it :0 Cry to Ion, the forums are happy and you’re one of the minority that aren’t

Nah, nobody here works for blizzard most likely. They don’t wanna get fired so the CEO can get a bigger bonus

Look, another alt.

The forums will never be happy. The Alliance high elf debate is a drop in the bucket. Even many of the people who got the customization they wanted, still aren’t happy.

Honestly didn’t think this would get much attention, given my original post on this was from the end of Legion era, 2018.

I think many on Alliance are missing the point of the post. I’m not exactly declaring victory in the High Elf war; I am merely saying I was correct.

High Elves, as an Allied Race, did not end up working. We got blue eyes and Blood Elf skin tones slapped onto existing Void Elves. Nothing more, and something legions of High Elfers assured me wouldn’t be acceptable.

Also of note, unlike the “Wildhammer” customizations, which were actually billed and labeled as such, Blizzard has interestingly not mentioned the term “High Elf” in any part of the “New Customization Options for Blood Elves and Void Elves” reveal.

When you google the new options or scan videos on YouTube, however, everyone calls them “High Elves!” “High Elf customizations!”, etc, seemingly accepting and confirming what I had been saying all along: that the High Elf request was a mostly shallow desire to simply look like a High Elf, masquerading as something deeper and concerned with lore. Nobody truly concerned with lore would accept Void Elves with cleared skin.

The fact everyone has so readily accepted blue eyes and light skins as “High Elves” just shows that’s all anyone cared about: a pair of cosmetic options so they can more easily head-cannon their character or pretend.

The irony of all this of course, is that with blue eyes on Blood Elves, they can now recreate the exact “traditional high elf” look of light skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, with half-elf ears and some new hairstyles to boot, without the unfortunate purple shadow blanket effect coating their entire body.

I’m all happy that everyone’s happy, but I said countless times that fleshy skin on Void Elves is all it would take to placate the masses and I was dragged by all manner of High Elfers and mass-reported by their rabid fans, despite ultimately being right. :handshake:

I’ve been looking at the grey eyes and have plans outside of the light skin options, dude, and I don’t doubt many more do too. Also the dressing room feels like a crapshoot for what we’re actually getting rn, so again- assumptions from you. You know what they say about assuming, brother. All I wanted was a white sclera with ANY eye color. I don’s see that but I sure do see more options than blue. But you know, make your assumptions and long discourse to fill your day if that’s what you’re into. You could just write this stuff down privately and not add to the hatred and spite others have seen here from you… But that’s just my take.

Cool, another of these threads.
Exactly what we need.

EVERY.
SINGLE.
DAY.

Alright, time to add fuel to the fire. Ahem.
Let me preface this that I think helf skins for velves is the best compromise they could have gone with without going into “elf overload”, short of making belves a neutral race and choose whether you go Horde (belf allegiance) or go Alliance (helf allegiance).

Irrelevant strawman. The point is they could be different enough from blood elves if given the options to be. Highmountain tauren were given antlers but are otherwise pretty much identical to tauren-- especially with war paint options coming. Helves could’ve had unique options that differentiated them from helves.

High Elves are not blue eyes. They’re a political/philosophical affiliation, same as Blood Elves.

“These are the goal posts I have set and I refuse to see it any differently no matter what justification is given.” Okay. Gonna just skip that section.

Just an amusing point I’d like to bring up is that the “Blood Elves should have blue eyes” crowd didn’t really exist until somewhere around the mass of threads about wanting High Elves as an Allied Race. Almost feels like the whole idea popped up out of spite, but I can’t claim to speak to anyone’s motivations. For some, it was certainly done out of spite, while for others I’m sure it was done out of simply wanting that WC3 helf aesthetic in whatever form they could achieve it in.

While I won’t deny that I doubt helves were ever on the table since they awkwardly shoved the square peg that is Void Elves into the round hole that was High Elf player demand, they’re certainly able to stand on their own in lore-- or at least, would be if they were given the attention of a playable race. Highmountain Tauren were just another tauren tribe (see: Trag Highmountani) 'til they decided to give them the special treatment. What stories are there about the Silver Covenant that have been unexplored? What of their conflict (or lack thereof) with Quel’thalas and the Farstriders? What about Vereesa and her horrible little hobbit-looking children?

We don’t, actually. There’s no indication Void Elves have received any boost to their numbers from their initial discovery, as they came into being from a single ritual gone awry and there’s nothing to say they’ve even discovered a way to turn other belves/helves into void elves.
Player population =/= Lore population.

 “If I call my opponents babies, that will make them appear childish, making me the victor!”

You made an entire thread to cry about high elves who weren’t liable to be added as a playable race. What does that make you? A sore winner, or do you just live to stir things up?

But you weren’t correct. Or are you completely blind to the fact that a) these options basically prove that High Elves would have worked perfectly fine had Blizzard not become enamored with Alleria’s void story on Argus and pivoted to Void Elves instead, and b) there are still people asking for a separate High Elf race because they not satisfied with just skin options?

And even if the skin options are enough to appease some, or even most people… so what? It’s not like that invalidates the request, and it is certainly not “shallow” to want options to look the way High Elves are supposed to look according to the lore. Your misplaced self-righteousness is truly incredible and not at all flattering.

Pro-helfers wanted Alliance High Elves. Void Elves were not that at the outset. Void Elves began as Blood Elves. Two years later and these skin options (and who knows what else may come with them) are basically an admission by the devs that Void Elves did not satisfy the desire for Alliance High Elves. Lore detailing more about the High Elf Wayfarers coupled with the new skins (and potential hair colors) allow for a legitimate High Elf origin for Void Elves.

And with Blizzard seeming to shift racial variants to customization options rather than clutter the UI with more and more races, this was the most time and cost efficient way to meet the demand without taking up a race slot and also needing to give Horde a new race as a counterpart.

Many pro-helfers that accept these skins as a compromise (myself included) are still asking Blizzard to add a bit more in-game reference to the High Elf wayfarers in Telogrus to confirm they are indeed joining the Ren’dorei and not just taking the 10 cent tour, and to also explain how these new members are being inducted and acquiring their powers so as to not only expand the Void Elf lore, but also to justify the new appearance options. So put that in your “shallow” pipe and smoke it.

Also keep in mind that for many on the anti- side this is one of the worst outcomes possible. There were some who didn’t even want Alliance to have the model and the last thing they wanted was for Void Elves to now get the skin tones too (and likely hair colors as well - still waiting for confirmation on that).

You weren’t right about High Elves not working and just because many people seem to accept this compromise doesn’t make the request a shallow one either. The fact that the devs came to this decision proves you weren’t right whether you realize it or not. But you’re welcome to your fantasy if it makes you feel better. The rest of us will be enjoying the High Elf parade! :clinking_glasses:

Nope sorry. You didn’t fix anything, and nothing you post will diminish the happiness of the High Elf parade. If you want to waste your time trying be my guest, but trying to bring other people down seems like a pretty crappy way to spend your time though.

Your playing as a void elf. Nothing will change that.

Trying to hijack another race after being thrown a bone is also a pretty crappy way to spend your time.
