Hmmm, My Husband and I started with two accounts at EQ launch. I had more time to play so started dual-boxing to level various 'toons for us. I think I started this because he was leveling one of the classes who could teleport but was being awfully slow about it. By WoW launch I was boxoring five to power level 'toons and farm items.
I boxor five in WoW to level, farm old content, and that kinda stuffs. I’ve turned this into as solo a game as I can. I do some LFD and such but not much. My Husband still raids in WoW but I had enough of that in EQ to last me a lifetime.

convenience.
I can double-camp rares
I can port myself anywhere (yep. I have a leveled mage on both accounts)
I can run my alts through dungeons.
I can powerlevel myself
I can take two characters mog farming, to maximize my mog collecting potential
I can multibox level (though, I haven’t done that in a long time)
I can invite myself to personal guildbank guilds. (yea, you know you’re jealous of this one)
etc.

This is the killer app, right here. My partner and I have always done it together, but if I did not have access to that second account, I’d probably buy one.

I originally got a second account because I wanted RaF with myself to speed lvling up back in I wanna say tbc, I upgrade it for boosts when expacs go on sale usually. Last time I used it was to power lvl my highmountain tauren in mid legion

Inviting my own alts into my bank guild. You don’t have to pay the subscription on the second account which I just use for alts, when I make new ones I use my alternate account to guild invite since there’s nobody else in there.
OP didn’t criticize anything, simply asked a question.
i’ve had two accounts going on since mid-2009 and the biggest reason i made the second one was to buy auctions posted from my main account in the Goblin AH.
with so much now being account wide, the second account is more of like luggage i’ll never be rid of
Smart cookie here. I got a mage in each one of my five-girl teams.

If you wanted an alt in 8.2, you should have had your toons on different accounts so you could multibox world quests to unlock essences and level your neck in half the time played. I would have done this if I would have known how alt unfriendly 8.2 was going to be.
You sure are an angry one. I was just asking because I’ve seen multiple account referenced in many forums posts and didn’t know why someone would pay for two accounts at once. It’s not something I’ve seen in other games.
If you can tell me another, better way to ask questions of players in this game than using the forum made for this game and populated by its players I’m all ears.
This makes perfect sense to me.
I don’t have a second account but can see the benefits. I’ve often thought of dual boxing because I think it would open up a lot of other options for game play. Someday I might get a second account.
Because it’s fun maybe? Also since blizz nerfed every option for friends, and guildies to power level other friends, and guild members through old content, some folks will multibox their mains to get the questing through old stuff done a little quicker. Just surprised these devs haven’t nerfed that somehow since it seems their only concern nowadays is just slowing everyone down, and nothing else lol.
Because they want to play them at the same time?
Cause if you used to play a furry warrior you needed a second account so you could follow it with your druid to keep it alive leveling.

Uhh, concurrent users. You can only use one character per account at a time. Multiple accounts, multiple characters on at once.
Maybe so. I’m finding that out, but when you get outside the WoW echo chamber you see this isn’t common at all with other games. In fact, I can’t think of another game where people have two simultaneous accounts with the frequency found here.
If all you play is wow and you ALWAYS play it I think you forget the knowledge you learned and take it for granted. Multi-boxing isn’t common knowledge in my world.
Oh, I don’t do it but I know that people do and they are typically the players with several accounts.
Clarification: thanks for the replies and knowledge.
I do think it’s odd the amount of “duh, I want to play multiple characters at once!” I’ve seen. To me, that isn’t an intuitive reason. If you want to by all means. I don’t care. Just remember that some people are not marinaded in WoW culture and/or knowledge and something that is “common knowledge” to you is absolutely new to them.
As I said above, I’ve never run into multi-boxing in other games I’ve played online (I think). Some forum posts are actual appeals for info, not veiled insults or trollery.
Thanks for the clarification.
Edit: that seemed snarky. My bad
