Why have both a wolf and wind serpent pet?

I’ve seen it recommended in several places to have both pets, but I look at them and it seems kind of redundant to me. Both pet’s abilities are things that allow them to do something even if they can’t be in range of the boss. Only thing I could think of was using the WS over the wolf if you aren’t in a melee group, but is that an important enough of a distinction to merit using 2 pet slots? Just wondering if there’s something I’m missing or if that’s it.

Buffs and survivability. The wind serpents do ranged dps, so they are not going to get cleaved to death. Wolves can sit next to you and buff you.

I believe most raid bosses demolish melee pets to hell and back. But I cannot fully attest to this and will defer to others on this.

guess it depends on your talent selection

Didn’t different pets have skills that could only be learned by taming that pet family? Didn’t hunters need to tame the Son of Hakkar to learn lightning breath rank 6? Lightning breath was great on bosses since nature damage ignores armor and was a ranged attack. Most hunters I knew had Lupos or Snarler from the wolf family and/or the Son of Hakkar.

Well, some mobs especially in MC have high nature resistance, which would hurt Wind Serpent usage. There’s some mobs in BWL that this applies to as well. Chromaggus for instance could be better or worse depending on his vulnerability shifts.

The buff wolf brings has miniscule dps benefits. It will get burned on an autoattack swing and most melees aren’t going to even notice it.

Edit After rechecking the wolf buff, it might be better than I thought. I thought it had a minute cooldown but 10 seconds isn’t too bad.

Cats are the kings in raiding. Wolves are close second if they buff every melee with howl. Wind Serpents are a bit overrated, and the whole “ranged attack” shtick is a bit of a meme since most of their damage comes from melee attacks anyways. On top of that, they only get their highest rank of Lightning Breath once ZG opens.

A more interesting thing about wolves and their howl is that Furious Howl is calculated before calculations for crit/ability damage on the Beta. Cat still comes out on top if you can manage your pet correctly, which you should if you’re competent.

Lupos wont be a big deal in 1.12. Snarler isnt a wolf and doesn’t have increased resists innately in 1.12 either. Windserpents can be the best dps pet cause of LB being ranged.

Windserpent viability will be largely determined by whether they work like they did in vanilla.

When windserpents got lightning breath, I tried using them. Went to ZG, tamed a Son of Hakkar. They ran off to range every time you wanted to use lightning breath. I assume this will be fixed, maybe it was fixed by late vanilla? I don’t know, I was a mage by then.

Everything being equal, nothing in vanilla is so hard that the damage difference between a windserpent and a [anything else] is going to be a big factor. If you’re a try hard, then yeah, Brokentooth for PvP, and a wolf+windserpent for pve. For anyone else, it’s really not that big of a deal.

Personally, I’ll have a ZG bat named Nerf, and I’ll just respec its resists as needed, just like I did in Vanilla.

Any decent hunter can keep their pets alive during raids by using scroll wheel for attack/retreat. Wind serpents tend to be more forgiving because they can reengage quicker.

I’ll be using the CC immune bat from RFK.

I forgot that 1.9 removed the shadow damage from Lupos and the resist stats from Snaler. Also Snaler is a wolf, you had me second guessing my self and looked him up on wowhead and petopia, both sites list Snarler as a wolf.

My bad got Snarler confused with Snort the heckler… you right.

it wont be CC immune because of pet normalization
lupos wont deal shadow damage either
attack speeds werent normalized, though

Blind Hunter slipped through the cracks in vanilla and retained his CC immunity into BC. He will probably get fixed but there is a chance he won’t.

oh, well then

I may have parroted some wrong information. Went looking for confirmation and found none. So maybe pservers are off, but I could’ve sworn he had his cc immunity in BC… Can find nothing tho.

You are correct, he indeed does have it till BC.

The private servers just happened to “fix” it themselves…

Got a source tho? I couldn’t find anything about it. Even found mention that he didn’t have his CC immunity.

Hard to do since it was completely niche and word of mouth.

However the private servers it manifested itself without influence every single time so there’s that. Only way is if someone tests on BETA.

I played on pservers that had a bug that was fixed in 1.2.5. So I’m not gonna go based off that. Reverse engineering does some wonky crap.
