First, not posting in the “Mega Thread” as although this is related to Water Striders, it’s a separate Topic, about underwater mounts And to preface, I’m someone who is VERY adamant about Water Striders retaining their water walking ability, before anyone calls me out about being anti-water strider or something.
If their issue is too many people are water walking on the striders and it’s not fun to look at, then why haven’t they looked into a different solution?
Currently, there’s quite a bit of underwater mounts available in the game.
However, I’d wager than there’s probably less than .01% of the playerbase uses them as anything but something to fool around in Stormwind Canals or such in. Why? Because they move slow. VERY slow. And this AFTER their buff in Legion. You only move 7% faster than run speed if you use an underwater mount. Druids in aquatic form move 1% faster than run speed.
For most people who use water striders, they only switch to them when they have a large body of water to cross, such as the bay in Tiragarde Sound or one of the lakes in Nazmir. When it comes to a river or stream, most people will simply make a hop and swim to shore on another mount.
So why doesn’t Blizzard simply double their swim speed, so it’d be as though you were water walking on top of the water? You might think this is too much, but it actually isn’t. This isn’t even faster than a regular underwater mount in Vashj’ir, or even remotely close to how fast the Vashj’ir Seahorse moves. In fact, it’s barely faster than the Underlight Angler.
On top of this, they can add a “buff” to the mounts, in which after dismounting an underwater mount, the cast time of your next ground mount is halved, which will help you switch to your preferred ground mount once you reach your destination much easier. (This won’t kick in if you were dismounted during PvP combat though)
I know that I for one would switch to an underwater mount if given the opportunity. Yes, water walking mounts are nice as you can just continue up the road on them, but at the same time, I hate looking at the bug. I often switch as soon as I’m on land anyway. There’s also the chance of getting dismounted by something underwater, which has happened more times than I like. Whereas with a fast underwater mount, I can maneuver around the nuisances underwater.
