Why Frost only got 9%

Why didn’t Frost didn’t get a higher % buff, right? That is the question many people have been asking. After watching a streamer’s video I think I have the answer.

When the Frost buff came out Fire had all of its potency slots. Frost on the other hand did not. I think it’s next week that we will have enough renown for Frost to get its second potency slot opened up, catching up to Fire. This is going to add another 2-3% to frost damage.

I think we all keep forgetting that the soul bind tree is a major factor in how the logs have been going, and we just haven’t really been considering it all that much.

Night fae has stronger soulbinds at the end of their tree though. in a couple more weeks the gap which frost closed by 2.5% is gonna be trampled by a 5% buff from Niya Burr.

Frosts closest answer to Niya is Draven which is only slightly better than ice bite. And has pretty ridiculous requirements of not moving for 12 seconds and not falling below 50% health

on top of this fire is also going to get another dps conduit from having a different soulbind other than Dreamweaver which first soulbind ability isn’t a dps one. So at the same renown level frost gets another potency conduit fire also gets to switch to niya and run grove invigoration instead of pod.

Best case scenario is fire doesnt use Burr because Discipline of the grove just make it to smoothe and we are looking at a best case scenario of catching up 1%. worst case they do use burr and we fall behind by 1% or 2% if we can’t use draven consistently

my math isn’t completey right because draven isn’t best for frost at renown 35 but go to bloodmallet and look at the difference between fire soulbinds at this weeks renown and renown 35 then look at frost soulbinds at this weeks renown and renown 35 and you will get a clearer picture.

I don’t get why no matter what site it always shows frost being ahead at full BIS. In truth I would much rather play Frost, but the consequences (raid & M+ invites) are to worry some to even give it a go. Also, time investment in the campaign is also and issue.

Not sure why people are referring to a 2-3% increase in damage for Frost with the 2nd soulnind.

Other classes are progressing too, and even with that 2-3 % damage increase, Frost will still be far behind Fire.

??? Because it is 2-3% increase, look at any site like Hero Damage or Bloodmallet .

I was looking at the tree’s and for Fire to pick up Niya Burr’s doesn’t fire have to give up its second potency slot? Burr is about 5% but you lose Disciple of the Grove then right? Even if it picks up another DPS conduit, you lose 3.3% by losing Grove. I think that’s correct?

Cus sims dont mean sht and their best used for creating gearsets. They aren’t even always programed right. The shadow sims were found to be not calculating mastery correct as late as 2 weeks ago. Real world data is all that matters.

Yes but to pick up any of venthyr end Soulbind damage abilities frost has to give up a potency slot as well. So we’re back to my original statement where yes we are going to gain a potency slot but fire is going to gain a Soulbind damage increase from Niya in the form of her very first ability.

None of the companions in any covenant offer a potency Conduit that also lines up with their best bottom of the tree damage ability. It’s rather take the potency conduit or take the best damage ability. Where in night fae case mathematically Niya burr is stronger than any fire or frost second potency conduit.

Korayn’s wild hunt tactics is pretty strong to. If lust is at the beginning of a fight korayn might be even better. also considering how fights work I will probably go with Korayn because combustion off rip along with lust and wild hunt tactics is gonna rock. also it will require no positional requirements or require me to interrupt raid bosses where i usually wouldn’t.

i don’t think a second potency is going to make frost in line with fire next week, at least not in terms of single target.

right now, frost sims higher than fire on a single target patchwerk sim. and it wasn’t that far behind in sims even prior to the buff. but when you look at warcraft logs, there is a huge disparity between both specs, and it still exists post-buff. yes, there is a lack of frost logs which are partly to blame for the disparity but the raid’s mechanics just don’t mesh well with frost’s rotation/cds.

a lot of the fights are movement heavy which frost heavily suffers from, and it doesn’t have the burst that the raid favors. also, some fights have moments of downtime (like shriekwing or sun king) which frost also suffers from. meanwhile, fire has really good burst on a min long cd and scorch/fire blast/phoenix flames that help with movement (especially when a boss is under 30%). it also doesn’t suffer from downtime as much since fire blast exists to help with procs.

also as a little tidbit, frost is supposed to give up its second potency at full renown as well. the BiS sim people commonly refer to where frost is outperforming fire only has one potency conduit. as frost mages, we are supposed to take daunting duelist which does not have a potency conduit before it.

tldr; i wouldn’t expect frost to suddenly be on par or better than fire next week with its second potency due to how the current tier’s mechanics are more favorable towards fire.

Doesn’t matter what the sims say (there are notable problems with sims plus Frost is harder to get to max sim DPS than Fire). The discrepancy between Frost and Fire on two pivotal CN encounters (Denathrius and Sludge) is really big. Frost has maybe two fights in which it outperforms Fire - Huntsman and Generals, which aren’t enough to justify being Frost over Fire for raiding purposes (unless you can play both).

Frost can be decent in M+ solely due to Glacial Fragments, which is situational.

But all that aside, few hardcore groups are willing to take Frost Mages due to their reputation so far in SL and the 9% buff plus the potential gains from Conduits aren’t going to be enough. Remember that Fire’s best tree also isn’t fully unlocked yet.
