Why don't people use Vent / Mumble anymore?

Literally everyone uses Discord now, why is this?

Discord has about 100 times more features and it’s free with optional pay features. You also don’t have to give out a master password to randos to invite them to your server.

Lol.
Because discord is free, better quality, better features, much more user friendly, has become more common, and you can post memes!

  1. It’s largely free.
  2. It’s a consolidation of the old guild websites that were actual websites until Enjin was a thing a briefly. Then that died.
  3. Discord’s feature set and mod community is super active.

Vent, Mumble, and Team Speak were just clients for paid-for VOIP. Discord provides so much more than they did for free.

Which is also why people don’t use the completely viable-now-working in-game voice chat either. Because the feature set is on there. Wipe on Nef?

Here, go look at the video I just linked on Raid Strats in Discord.

vs.

Wipe on Nef? Go to www.youtube, etc.

Mumble was always bad, Vent on the other hand actually kinda good if you set it up well.

Discord, meh its whatever. Nothing to write home about, just that everyone uses it, thats why its most popular, not because its actually any good. In some ways its kinda invasive because it displays what games you are playing, yes I am aware that you can turn that off but that is the default setting.

Vent was great back when TTS and sending TTS cross channels was a thing, when they cleaned up the abuse around this - it lost it’s special fun factor. :frowning:

Used to arena with this guy who didn’t have a mic for like a year and would use TTS. I can still hear Microsoft Sam saying ā€˜No’ and ā€˜Sheep’ when I think about it.

Also my roflcopter goes soysoysoysoysoy

Oh and fun tidbit, you can still use TTS on discord, just type /tts then your message. Most big servers have the feature disabled though

It’s better than all the rest, and cheaper. It rendered everything else obsolete. Also, since everyone is finally on the same program, you don’t have to juggle switching programs every time you switch guilds or games. Since everyone uses this now, you have 1 program, 1 account, and you’re all set, no matter where you go or what you play. We only ever could have dreamed of this program 15 years ago.

Nah, it’s totally because it supports syntax highlighting for code…

I think the 15 year ago version of this was ā€œXfireā€ wasn’t it? Or something on those lines

But yeah agreed, Discord has the most perfect system for gaming and a range of other goodies

Maybe. I used to use BattleCom when playinjg CounterStrike with friends before the release of WoW. The guilds I was in always used Ventrillo, but some of the Aussie guilds I would run with as a PuG from time to time insisted on Mumble.

Oh, and Skype, later for Arenas (and sometimes RBGs).

my retail guild uses teamspeak. because it’s a gaming community and somehow it’s better.

mumble - cant adjust volume. that was dead in the water the second it came out and i hated every second of it. ā€œif you set it up right it will be normalized volumeā€ well they didnt and it’s not. burn in hell.

edit: i didn’t like Mumble.

Neither did I. I’d always groan and begrudgingly install it, for the PuG raids I would join from time to time. Then uninstall it as soon as we’d finish.

I’ve never understood why people think Teamspeak is better

It’s disgustingly terrible

i think it’s because of its authenticating system.

Because discord is better

why do ppl use smartphones instead of old rotary phones??

my grandma still has one rotary phone.

you know why?

  1. it’s not obsolete - it still makes and receives phonecalls.
  2. it still works - it still makes and receives phonecalls.

IMO the reason it is THE program for Voice now, it’s easy to link others in and get running with a minimum to no fuss or tech support.
