Why don't more guides use Chi Torpedo?

It’s all I ever use. Yet when I check out different monk talent builds, it’s always Roll, not Chi Torpedo that is used.

Celerity reduces the Roll CD by 5 seconds and gives an extra charge.

I’ve always felt that between the extra distance traveled by Torpedo plus the stacking movement speed buff that it took you further. However, have never bothered to test them back to back. I’ve always liked the look and ‘feel’ of Torpedo as well. in keys like Stonevault where one cannot mount, I’m always at the front of the packs when group uses speed boosts.

I prefer chi torpedo. I hate regular roll.

In MoP classic though I’ve been using roll with momentum (which is merged into modern chi torpedo) because torpedo is a choice talent against RJW in MoP.

It depends what you are doing. If you are a healer in pvp sure. If you are doing dungeons and raids you don’t wanna roll away too far since you are a melee, it will take more time to get back and attack and you’ll losr uptime.

It’s good for constant movement becuase the speed bonus afterwards stacks up but, in most cases I don’t use it because I use roll primarily for a quick reposition, and then I also have lighter than air now so having an extra charge with a lower cooldown is just great for me.

Lighter than air makes more sense with roll.

Like everyone else has said, it really just depends on what you need it for. It sounds like you (OP) are aiming for the furthest distance in the shortest amount of time, which Chi Torpedo is good for. However, most guides expect people to use roll as a positioning tool, in which case you don’t necessarily want to zoom halfway across the room uncontrollably with Chi Torpedo, so the extra charge of the standard roll + air dash is a better fit.

I’ve rolled off the edge of the maps/platforms enough times in M+, chi torpedo would be suicide.

If you want to win race a chi torpedo. If you want to dodge mechanics or have short burst movement then its roll.

Last time I used Chi Torp was for running the orb solo on Ghuun on one side. It is good for longer distances and the speed boost but imo roll beats it out in every other way.

I prefer roll though for a few reasons myself:
-More control over where you end up and easier to roll backwards, torp feels more janky to me control wise
-3 charges, which also means 3 uses of lighter than air

  • 5s faster recharge ( 17 sec ) and I almost always have a roll charge for a mechanic
-not enough ghuun type fights to take advantage of going that extra distance with torp and I dont pvp.

If you like Torp you can easily run it no problems though. It is probably really good for running flags too in PVP. They are both very powerful movement abilities tbh.

Chi Torpedo is the best choice for long distance movement and speed, which just isn’t as frequent in content as the short bursts that more frequent Rolls provide with Lighter than Air.

I use Chi Torpedo mostly in PvP for the additional speed boost when running away.

In PvE I only play it on BM again for the speed to cover more distance. I think as tank most mechanics are designed for you to be able to walk out of them to compensate for the existence of bdk that and not as many things will one shot you as tank compared to mw/ww. With those an extra roll and air dash (lighter than air) is useful for positioning, dodging, etc. Chi Torpedo is more for getting around rather than dodging. You can use it to dodge but then you have 2 charges to dodge with when you could have 3.
