I tried my hand at PVP back when EverQuest first came out, and I decided that PVP in a role playing game just doesn’t work for me.
The different classes in this genre have strengths and weaknesses made for playing against the environment, whether grouped or solo. Add in item level and other factors to tip the scale and it can become a waste of time to even participate in.
I tried the scenario based PvP arenas back in the day. And they were… not fun. It’s the same base problem that many PvE centric games have when they try to impliment PvP. PvE gear is often near worthless in them, so you get curbstomped by anyone and everyone until you can grind out for a set of “starter” PvP gear. At which point you’ll STILL get curbstomped by everyone with better PvP gear. Thus arena PvP such as Warsong Gulch just aren’t fun unless you’re already fully geared up.
And open world PvP such as what WotLK and Burning Crusade introduced aren’t much fun either. Either you’re the only one in the entire zone, or you’re regularly getting jumped by a group and/or higher level player(s). or you’re in the group (or are the higher level player), in which case there’s no real risk involved. And to make matters worse, if you dare try to engage in it at all, it’s now open season on you where griefers are concerned, so PvE players don’t bother.
LOL 11572 out of how many players responded to the poll? So really, people who preferred any given type of PvP is a minority portion of the minority who responded to the poll. Or in other words, not indicative of overall popularity.
Because most people have an EGO that wouldn’t allow them to die in a video game, or at least not very much. They don’t want to fight a dynamic foe where they need to learn how it works and how to counter and adjust in real time, they want to read the “strategy” that tells them what to do so they can pretend they are good until that gets to hard for them too and they stop progressing.
Most, not all. And some of the carebears are pretty good at PvE and they do both because either way you have learn your class to progress in either PvP or PvE.
Because pvp in a game with RPG mechanics is cringe.
Its not about raw skill but “decision making” and i pass on that.
if i want to pvp i play games where raw talent wins.
If a good player can be “countered” by something other than raw reflexes and skill, im off.
Yeah, hes faster and better than me, let me “counter” him.
Let me guess, you think overwatch takes skill to play?
It doesn’t, and i got top500 in there without effort.
Trash game with trash rpg mechanics.
WoW is very much a PvE focused game. While there was always some faction based PvP in it, that was not the main focus for a very long time. And like all MMOs that tried open world PvP, it demonstrates exactly why MMOs are ill suited for it. While it CAN be engaging to take part in PvP fights, both in open world and arenas, more often then not it’s not a fair fight. In open world PvP you’ll get the people who power leveled to the cap and spend all their time picking on low level players, because to them large numbers of easy kills=skill. And in Arena PvP you run into the fact that the abilities and classes were balanced around co-op PvE. They are unbalanced in PvP by default, and gear disparity only makes it worse. Especially if a game has seperate PvE vs PvP defensive gear. Even more so if you have to be engaging in the PvP a lot to even get the PvP defensive gear.
because blizzard has the tech to fix bgs but utterly refuses. they could force balancing of teams within reason before game starts via the use of cross faction systems. instead they think starting an ashran with one side having 1 healer in greens and 14 healers on the other side is fair and balanced. they think having a system that backfills a losing game tih 9 new healers so its 11 vs 2 is fair and balanced. they think temple backfilling 5 healers vs 2 for 7v2 healers is fair and balanced.
so you end up with one side of the other absolutely BLOWING the other side out of the water without them having a chance or opportunity to do anything about it. and people just give up and slowly walk away from the game.
you will never balance the game 100%, theres far too many variables… and as with any pvp there is absolutely snowballing at play where a few bad decisions early in the game can turn the last half of a game into an absolute shutut, but how often are games determined at the start of the game? how is that fun? its not. not for anybody.
thats not even getting into their horrible rewards system where there is 0 incentive to stay and fight. why play a 30 minute grindfest of a bg where you just lose constantly as the other team trolls and times out the match gy camping you for honor points that are completely worthless when you can leave, log a different char and que up again and be back in the bg in under 3 mins as horde currently due to faction imbalance? theres no incentive whatsoever.
thats not even getting into the premade bg quing constantly against randoms which should have been removed as an option when rated bgs were created.
wow pvp is just wilful neglect and utter contempt compounded by rewarding extremely toxic player behavior that cannibalizes the community and pushes people away.
One thing I’m curious is why random BG group finder is empty. I remember back in MoP and WoD there were random BG 5mans running all the time in Group Finder and oQueue before that. It was barely a premade, but at least you could get the team comp you wanted at the gear level you wanted.
