Why doesn't Blizz disclose their # of active subs?

When I started playing WoW in 2008, Blizzard would boast about their active number of subs.

Why doesn’t Blizz disclose their # of active subs anymore?

Probably because they were tired of “this decision was crap and the subs prove it” threads. Happened right after the flying debacle, imagine that.

Why do you care, though? Is knowing the subscription numbers going to magically change how you view the game? Or lend credence to whatever criticism you have? Nah, just forget about it.

Because they determined it isn’t necessary to disclose to shareholders and that their other numbers speak far more to their quarterly performance than just sub numbers.

She explained why she wanted to know, Ion. It’s right there in the OP.

Unless you’re a shareholder… none of your business.

There’s nothing to boast about anymore

Sounds like an excuse to complain, and try to validate whatever issue she has by claiming “Omgz! Subs!”

News Flash; MMORPGs don’t brag about subscriptions anymore. Active accounts, sure, but not subs.

No, it’s a pretty innocent question. They did it until 2015 then stopped. If you don’t live on the forums (like me) or follow them on twitter, you probably don’t know the answer.

You and Jay, err I mean Cayna, seem needlessly defensive for some odd reason

Uh huh. Funny thing to say coming from someone who immediately tried to insult others by calling them members of the development team. How insecure in your opinion do you have to be to resort to that?

They never released the numbers for us, it was always for the investors and now they have better data to share with them.

Its like facebook used to boast about 1 billion users. Then it came out 2 3rds were fakes. The point is you have to walk the walk to boast about numbers.

I wasn’t insulting them or the two of you. I was just pointing out how weird it is for two players to get their feathers ruffled over a simple question. Both of you are acting like someone was questioning a decision you made.

So you read something into a post that wasn’t there and decided to double down on your lack of perspective by being a twit about it? The only person in this thread that is desperate and defense is you.

This is the only real answer.

Marketing gets to share sub numbers when those numbers prove the game is attractive. WoW’s sub numbers are now irrelevant to marketing the game.

Could be because almost all of them aren’t subscription based anymore. What subscribers would they have to boast about?

Though I do find it funny how most of the people who ever claimed it’s not a big deal would be the first ones to use boastful subs to defend the game and why it’s so marvelous – and how those who offer criticism are dead wrong. Like they always did.

Excellent post and observation Skyhorn!

Well, allow me to shatter that illusion for you; I don’t care about subscriptions. They mean nothing to me as a player, they mean nothing to me as a form of “Aha, I was right!”, and they mean nothing to me as far as criticism goes.

And here I was going to put “almost all”. Looks like that has to be fixed now.

No, see. Your post would have been fine, except that you chose to specifically quote me. Which means that I was the intended receiver of “all the people”; that’s how using the quote feature works.

I don’t put any stock in subscription numbers, I don’t use them to defend or criticism the game. Ergo, your quote of me was incorrect.
