Why does Parry still exist?

Why does parry still exist in this game?

Melee dps can get 5 combo points finishers parried just… randomly and seeminly for no reason.

Range dps don’t randomly get their spells resisted.

So why does this old relic still exist in the game?

Stand behind the target.

Range dps do not have this requirement, so why are melee more punished?

There is zero punishment as a range dps, whereas being melee you’re punished by positional requirements, cleaves (with zero indicators 99% of the time) and things that push you out of melee range constantly.

Just doesn’t make sense since one is drastically more punished than the other.

Different things are different.

Sometimes DW melee miss an auto.

It just is what it is.

Range also get targeted by some mechanics over melee and generally are more punished by movement.

Parry exists because they need a reason for tanks to take critical strike :^)

Admittedly it’s kind of weird that while stats like expertise and hit and armor pen all got pulled… parry stays.

If I had to guess it’s because of a few specific abilities that should exist but wouldn’t have a good function if parry got pulled.

Last time I checked, tanks use parry.

Pro: Melee can swing and attack with out stopping, even while on the move.
Con: Melee positionally have to be on the side or behind enemy to not get parried and avoid cleaves.

Pro: Melee cannot be interrupted from basically all of their attacks (like a kick or silence that casters can be affected by)
Con: Melee can be parried for bad positioning/cds or dodge from cds.

Pro: Melee almost all have tons of mobility.
Con: Melee can be kited or have to move more often from mechanics (i.e.e knock backs, AOE abilities you need to run out from, or w/e)

Pro: Melee generally have way more survival tools.
Con: Melee are prone to getting hit by stuff being in the thick of battle.

Let’s stop acting like melee have just a hard job vs range. I play them all and TBH melee is easy mode. Minor positioning and you’re just sitting there beating on stuff in PvE and PvP. It’s not rocket science.

Skill issue

Because he’s adorable. :heartpulse:

What’s a combo point?

Lets imagine parry does get taken away. Would melee actually stand in front of an enemy willingly? Even the threat of getting cleaved, knocked back, cone aoe’d or aoe smashed would be enough to keep them behind the boss. And that threat has been ingrained so much for so long it is muscle memory at this point.

Gear into hit chance and this won’t happen.

The problem is there are some fights you want to stack on the tank (to soak etc) and getting parried feels awful. Sire D for instance could parry even thought you needed to stack in front of him and if an important ability got parried you are SOL.

Not a problem in dungeon as very few dungeon bosses parry but it is a problem in raid from time to time.

i love having a 24% chance to miss my autos and then on top of that get parried too

Parry is a great mechanic and I hope they never remove it.

Melee DPS have their own advantages, learn how to play Melee and Parry becomes a very small issue…

While casters may not “miss” anymore

They can still be LOS or abused by running through them and getting the “must be facing target” or simply out ranged.

Interrupts and silences and all that as well, can’t really interrupt melee abilities.
