Why does new classes have to start so high level?

I remember when I wanted my Monk, I had to level them from a low level and had a blast doing it.

Demon Hunters started high, and now Evokers also start high level. Why? I find you learn a class easier starting low with fewer spells then gradually adding spells. I think this is why DH for example has a small number of spells even at max level, especially for DPS spec.

I wish there was an option to start one at like level 10 if we wanted. As a person who plans to roll one as a healer, I learn best by healing dungeons to level. Starting at 58 wont give me a whole lot of time to experience the healing aspects of dungeons.

easy fix dont play them if you dont like the accelerated level gain

I have every class, I will play one. I just wish they didn’t have to start so high.

To give an example, right now I have max level characters(which includes 3 reserved names for Dracthyr) my plan was to level 1 as DPS, 1 as heals, then boost one to 60. But since they start at 58, I have 0 reasons to boost. And since I am at character cap, I legit can’t even use my 60 boost.

We get a free boost, starting them low and letting people use their boost on them if they want to start them at 60 seems like a better option.

Deathknights also started high. It’s basically a thematic thing. As a level 1 monk, you are a new monk. Your character is still learning the basics of being a monk.

Deathknights, Demonhunters, Evokes are all characters that are already formidable masters of their craft. By the time you create, that character already has a backstory that you weren’t a part of. Whether it’s the Deathknight’s life prior to being raised, the Demonhunter’s experiences being trained by Illidan at the Black temple, or the Evoker’s time spent training and fighting in Neltharion’s army before being frozen in stasis.

Edit: This is also more or less why they all fall under the ephemeral category of “Hero Class”.

Monk was the only time they introduced a new class that wasn’t a hero class. This is just an expansion feature. You’ll be able to level from 10-80 in 11.0

Maybe Demon Hunters and Evokers, but Death Knighs were/are fallen heroes that were/are raised by the Lich King of the time so one could say that their DK was a powerful priest, mage, warrior, etc that was killed and then raised.

This is generally how I like to learn a new healing class also. Perhaps one solution for players like us could be to level synch down to join a friend through dungeons… not the most ideal way, but perhaps that is a possibility

They are hero classes so start with power

Monk wasnt a hero class just a class

Hold it off until the next level squish :joy:

At the time, the reasoning was that it felt too weird to have a death knight or demon hunter killing boars in west fall or other menial things low level characters do.

However that’s exactly what they can do now after the level squish so who knows really.

Because they’re hero classes. Monks weren’t a hero class.

Hero Classes always start at a higher level because that is one of the features of being a Hero Class. They are part of the current expansion and also powerful in unique ways.

Oh and don’t worry about not being too knowledgeable as most people will be completely new to the class as well.

Cuz its a hero class.

Common misconception from most people, including content creators is that monks are also a hero class. They are not. Only DKs. DH and now Evokers are.

They did monks a little differently. Instead of starting at a high level, they had access to a 100% exp bonus. Likely because hero classes canonically start strong, while a lvl 1 monk just beginning their journey makes sense.

Hero Classes is a lore thing and kind of started with Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition prestige classes, wherein to become a member you need to be a certain level with certain prerequisites so that their levels of power and abilities are somewhat balanced.

Deathknights, the first Hero class, were supposed to be tough as nails killing machines. If you look at their starting area it’s basically the story of how 1 skilled DK can lead an army and pretty much wipe out an entire city of Scarlet Crusaders, only being stopped by a Deus Ex Machina.

Demon Hunters, the second Hero class, were supposed to also be tough as nails killing machines, and their starting area was basically a tutorial on how by devouring demon souls and getting megaman style powerups one or two DH’s can take out a whole demon army piece by piece, only being stopped by a Deus Ex Machina.

Basically to pull these class fantasies off you can’t be a random level 1 killing boars in the valley of trials. To have access to these otherworldly powers you kind of have to be the Übermensch to start out if your class description is “Being diet coke Arthas” or “Being diet coke Illidan”.

This remains true… for a while… and then they throw it out because reasons.

Monk wasn’t the Übermensch. Like Goku the monk starts off as some lower level guy who just slowly increases in strength over time until he’s on par with the rest. It makes sense for the monk to smash boars in valley of trials. It makes sense for the monk to train by fighting werewolves in SFK. It makes sense for the monk to travel the countryside doing small menial tasks… whereas by contrast there’s little reason for a DH for example to be collecting mushrooms for someone’s stew or doing anything that’s not really related to their quest to rid the universe of demons.

DK was 100% about stopping arthas and after that they kind of lost their purpose, which was further destroyed when they found out that they really weren’t diet coke Arthas… they were diet coke captain nipples. Demon Hunters don’t have a purpose other than hunting demons. Now that the legion is in somewhat of a decline their just waiting for Danuser to kill off what’s left of their purpose of existing. Not really sure what they do after that.

It would be interesting if there was an island somewhere where Demon Hunters are slowly healing their tattoos, expelling their chaos energy, and slowly adapting to normal life. Deathknights on the other hand probably just look forward to dying. In the ‘who’s the bigger edgelord’ contest, I think DK certainly has the edge.
