It’s probably a super simple reason that will make us feel ashamed of ourselves for always hitting exit game at the end of our session instead of patiently waiting 20 seconds .
“Most MMOs have a “home area” where benefits are received for logging out - such as an XP buff when you return. Logging out outside of this area is not recommended thus there is a timer so you don’t accidentally do it. I think I read somewhere long ago it takes a bit for the server to register the log out so the 20 seconds outside a safe area gives the player a chance to react if their character gets attacked before said time.
It doesn’t just click log out and close the game page at the top right instance out.
You can lose information if you log out improperly. I had to rebuild all my addon settings and weakauras because I lost my internet connection conveniently right as I hit “exit anyway” (or whatever that button is) when logging out in some random spot in Zuldazar.
But I imagine it has as much to do with preventing people cheesing pvp stuff as anything else.

It’s an outdated thing that was put in because of pvp. So someone couldn’t ninja log to avoid a pvp fight.
One of the things the original developers added.
The reason is to prevent players from “getting themselves in danger” with another player or an NPC and then breaking out of combat immediately, by logging out instantly, to prevent death for a bad decision.
It creates a sense of caution that a user must take when approaching dangerous aspects of the game world. This concept is considered crucial to the mmo experience.
I don’t know but you can also just close the window
Its a pvp thing
If you are losing a fight and if logging out instantly would prevent you from dying.
Imagine how that would effect open world pvp.
It is a throw back to the time when we had actual pvp servers so you couldn’t just simply log out and avoid getting deaded… Even if you ‘exit game’ your character is still in the world for about 15-20 seconds.
20 seconds to change your mind.
Why are there people saying it’s a pvp thing? Oh that’s right nothing in the open world has been deadly enough to kill you since vanilla.

WoW leaves your character on the server for 20 seconds after you tell it to log out so you can’t just plug pull out of combat
Not at all considering you can just queue for an arena skirmish and achieve the same affect.
