Why does game completely freeze and restart when I alt tab now?

This started happening after like the 10.0.7 update and has been going on ever since. What’s going on?

Mine doesn’t do that when I alt tab, so I’m not sure what might be happening to your system.

Are you out of RAM, or pagefile space? Drives more than 80% full?

How do I check?

It’s only happening to WoW and I play bigger games like Cyberpunk with no issue

Open task manager and check RAM usage. View your drives and observe the space on them.

Just tested, and memory at 56% with wow and all my google browsers open

I feel like it’s a game or addon issue or something, it completely reloads itself as if I’m zoning but without the loading screen and afterwards I can alt tab fine with no issues. Happens maybe 1 time out of like 10 alt tabs

Yeah, removing addons should always be your first step. Please note: DISABLING addons does pretty much nothing.

wasnt this an issue with the latest windows update and wow?

I was having similar issues. A combination of two solutions posted by other people in another thread solved it for me. Game is freezing when I alt tab - #26 by Pazzik-daggerspine is my thank you post for their help.

Short version of what fixed it for me: disable Hardware Acceleration in other running applications (Discord, Battle.net app, Web Browser, etc) and set Max Background FPS to exactly match your chosen Max Foreground FPS setting.

i can run wow fine with about 9gb free space but i do have 5000mb paging file (virtual memory) and 20gb ram (laptop) … system requirements does not say what free space is needed after the game is installed. it just says ssd 128gb available space

It’s a standard requirement (15–20% free space) for drives in any computer, no matter the applications you’re running.

As for your RAM, sounds like you have some mismatched sticks, which can also lead to problems. All modern RAM sticks, when there are multiples, should be run in equal pairs — same size, same speed.

Same things been happening to me ever since that as well.

20% CPU, 48% RAM, 0-1% disk usage
I dont think its my PC.

It’s also been happening to me since the patch.

There’s a problem with Windows 24H2 which was pushed out broadly around the same time as 11.1. I haven’t found any workaround so I’ve downgraded to 23H2 but some posts online have suggested turning off Window’s game mode can help. There’s another setting under Graphics related to optimising for borderless full screen apps that you can try disabling.

i have 4gb and 16gb =20gb ram (i think) but 8 GB will be running in dual channel and 12 GB in single channel.
part of the cpu-z txt report
Memory Type DDR4
Memory Size 20 GBytes
Channels 2 x 64-bit
Memory Frequency 1596.7 MHz (3:48)
Memory Max Frequency 3200.0 MHz

All I did was match the background FPS up to normal FPS and it seems to have fixed the problem so far. Alt tabbed a bunch of times to test and hasn’t happened yet.

Man, it’s tough. I heard MS said they’ve fixed the stuck Alt+Tab thing already, but I still had to turn off hardware acceleration in both Edge and Firefox just to play WOW without crashing whenever I hit Alt+Tab. The downside? The browser experience tanked:

a) Scrolling with the mouse got all “choppy”.
b) On Firefox, if I scrolled down the comments section, the video would freeze when I went back up. Audio still worked, but the video was toast. I had to keep minimizing and maximizing the browser just to make it work again.

What did I end up doing? I rolled back to Windows 23H2, and guess what? Poof, all those problems disappeared. Everything works perfectly now—hardware acceleration on, no registry hacks, no turning off game mode. Just smooth sailing.

So, my advice? Test out going back to 23H2 and see if it clears up your issues too. If it doesn’t, then… well, that’s a whole other headache I can’t solve.

I’m just crossing my fingers the next updates (25H1 or 25H2) don’t bring these bugs back, because, man, I’ll be stuck living in 23H2 land forever… lol.

For reference, here’s my setup: 5700X3D | 32DDR4 | 4070 Super | x570s | NVME.
Oh, and yeah, I don’t use pirated stuff—don’t want to deal with unnecessary issues like that.
