Why does frostbolt seem slow?

I started out a mage, but soon felt that frostbolt was just sluggish. A 2 second cast time over and over just seems like a lot (although I am used to play ret pally and having instant cases). Does the cast time lessen as you level, or is that how it plays? When I was messing around with a priest, the short cast of Smite seemed just about right. Is this an issue for other people, and do you get used to the long cast time after awhile?

Frostbolt pays off as a Frost mage because of its ability to generate Icicles, Fingers of Frost procs, and Brain Freeze procs. The spell itself doesn’t feel particularly impressive, but it is our only hard-cast rotational spell and is essentially filler. If you want a harder-hitting basic nuke, play arcane mage, fire mage, or a different class.

If you’re playing Frost, Frostbolt is your last priority spell to cast no matter what DPS scenario you find yourself in (PvE). You use it when you have no procs, no cooldowns (Frozen Orb/Icy Veins, any other talent), etc. as a filler.

If you’re not Frost, the other filler spells of each spec are better, and Frostbolt is a resort if you’re lockout out of your spell school or if the target is immune to your Fire/Arcane casts.

Someone show beckysbanker the meaning of haste!

You don’t get much haste until endgame, which I guess means frostbolt is going to feel very slow to cast while leveling. Well, at least to me.

yeah frost will be really slow for a bunch of reasons while leveling. it does get a lot better at cap, but tbh unless youre attached to the frost look, just level as arcane n spam missiles.

Shameless plug that this is great advice, Arcane is in my opinion the best spec for general open world PvE and leveling

I’m so proud of all of you for promoting Arcane

trust me when i say that with even halfway decent gear, frostbolt is anything but slow. with the icy propulsion conduit, by time raiding hits u can keep iv up most of the time, and that alone is 30% haste. for st its slick ice which makes fb go 20% faster, and during lust/hero its 30% more. currently on live, if u run vision of perfection major, ull see ur icy veins last a LONG time, and with about 20% haste baseline on ur char plus maybe some overwhelming power azerite traits, ur looking at what frost’s baseline in sl is going to be. i hesitated to play frost in sl because it was loooking too FAST. overall though, couldnt find anything slower that had no or little in the way of dots, was ranged, and didnt rely much if at all on a pet. mm hunter was close but i hate the feeling of focus, and destro just doesnt feel right anymore since the legion changes to me. off topic sorry, but yeah, NOT SLOW.
