I get the point they want to make money but how about make a fun game then I pay for it. Now it is just they “pay for it” part. The grind (rep/renonw/recipe/conduit/old legoo currency), imbalance (getting one shot all day), and time gating (how many people have 4 set now lol)… all those part, i don’t know how those really help them. At least i don’t see how those features help me.
This has been going on for a while. I still remember a druid in my guild got 3 legendary during first month of 7.0. Then those daily artifact power grind. In BFA it is just worse with those corruption currencies. Now they add renown on top of it. Just why? Shouldn’t a game feel like something fun to play instead of 2nd job?
All too often content starts out as a great idea that would be fun for the player base, then it gets all bent out of shape and distorted into a crappy version of its former self because it needed to deliver more engagement levels, had time gates or currencies added to milk it for more than it should have rightfully been worth.
What would really make this game fun… would be a duck mount. I think we just need a duck mount and everything would be better. Especially if it floats on water and you can fish off of it.
Because they know the golden age is over and are milking it until the end. “the end” might be another 10 years, but they’re doing the minimum to keep it going
Since they haven’t hit a patch schedule since… legion really, they have been trying to stretch minimal amounts of content out as far as possible. So the timegating of old just seems so much more boring now.
You don’t get chunks of things to do until the x.0 or x.5 patches, then after that initial burst it is a drip feed until the couple hours of content has been drug out for over a month.
The last time I had carefree gameplay was SL prepatch. Because BfA was over, and we hadn’t really come to realize how convoluted and hollow SL was going to be.
I’d definitely get behind a “have fun” dev model in place of the “jump through hoops for a menial reward for your time” model.
Oh well, here I stay…for now.
Some grinds in this game are so great I’ll do them 1000 more times and love it every time.
Other grinds in the game have left a permanent knot on my forehead from banging it onto the desktop so many times. lol.
blizzard has a VERY hard time comprehending that grinds dont necessarily = fun.
As I said elsewhere…steak is steak. but Id like my steak on a nice dinner plate with all the fixins and garnish. Yeah, steak is steak, but I dont want a cheap cut and I dont want it to look like its been picked out of a dumpster and tossed onto a paper plate.
Some steak cuts melt like butter in your mouth. Some are tougher than shoe leather.
All steaks arent the same…all grinds arent the same.
Thinking all grinds are the same, as many seem to want to claim, is akin to saying that all written novels are the same because they all are printed words on pages between two covers…or because all movies are motion picture.
No…they literally arent.
some books and movies are classics you can watch time and time again. Others you can barely sit thru the first time, let alone having to vomit thru them a second…
when blizzard figures this simple concept out, maybe we’ll see more Drustvars and Highmountains and fewer Zerith Mortis’
like i said above…some grinds are fun and memorable…some zones are classics. Others just arent and personally Im not going to pretend bad movies or books are great…and Im not going to congrats bliz when content sucks.
but yeah…games SHOULD compel you to play…not make you dread logging in.
Kinda reminds me of a band who releases an album that just rocks from first song to last. Some old bands from the 70s would take off like a rocket ship. Then the next album would suck so hard you couldnt believe it was the same band.
Bliz makes me think of one band in particular…Foghat. lord…some of their albums were so bad Im embarrassed to say I own the things, lmao.
Others, are really good all the way thru (well, IF youre old like me and like that kind of music, lol)
Rush was another one. Good lord…their first album didnt have a bad song on it. Then later on Geddy Lee decided to make a shift from real guitar and drums rock to more synthesizer. Signals was a masterpiece, but it all went downhill from there. Never did buy another Rush album.
I love Rush. I love Foghat…but bad music is bad music and even my favorite bands aint getting any slack when the content sucks. Im not a charity lol. Give me something worth paying for or dont whine when i dont buy it.
If the last two expansions were what WoW was…say all old content was gone. Id never have lasted a month with this game.
The golden age, as you say, sadly seems to be gone.
I’ll personally keep playing the old stuff until they finally push the wrong button and enough is enough, but I aint buying any new expansions unless they can prove theyve changed their ways.
The borrowed power grinds have largely been removed at this point. You get 40 renown for free, 80 for just playing the game, conduits at iLvl 226 when you go to ZM, and you can purchase ash and cinders with flux, which is abundant. What else, exactly, are you looking for?
Rep grinds are simply a part of the game, as is some degree of RNG in gear. They’ve been there since Vanilla. There will even be creation catalyst starting Tuesday for casuals to get tier. If you’re unwilling to do even a normal rep grind or expect gear handed to you on a platter, perhaps you should be playing something else.
If you’re getting one shot all day on a hunter I don’t know what to say… Get a tank pet and find your turtle button? My mage requires a fair amount of skill at kiting when I solo but that’s always been the case.
This is part of the problem imo.
The game should be made so that it doesn’t go obsolete.
By the time I get anywhere close to good gear, the ilvl increases, the grind increases, and everything I just worked for I could now get twice as fast. That’s not a good feeling. It’s why I’ve barely played in SL, and I know it’s why others have quit.
It is Blizzard blatantly stretching out content due to lack of content. Otherwise, there’d be no need for them to reduce it later, if it was good content.
Its wild to me how this is an issue, when Blizzard can so consitently make games fun.
I’ve been playing Diablo 3 for like 15 seasons now, and it’s been great each time.
They consistently make each new season interesting. Every new form of progression or Item/set rework is done to make the game a more fun Character-Progression-focused-RPG.
And yet, In wow we occasionally get things that feel deliberately un-fun…
One more reason I got off that treadmill, lol.
I dont mind the grinding…but just when you get to a good spot, they up the ante again. Sorry. I love playing but Im not a flipping hamster on a wheel. I got to see a ‘end’ in sight or Im just not going to do it.
Which all leaves me saying screw it,…just give me good content and I’ll play casually instead…but we cant even get that without smothering even what is good content in mind numbing systems and currency grinds.
For jesus sake…at least have the daily stuff drop 100 gold PER quest so Im getting something other than rep and anima i no longer have any use for.
I’m having fun and don’t feel anything I do is a grind because I just play the game. What is there to grind in 9.2 that doesn’t take a few hours? The main quest to get a free legendary lol? Blizzard has to bend over backwards to make the game relevant to as many players as possible and I feel like they’ve done a good job.
We’ve been conditioned to want to play the game 24/7 and when that desire finally fades, despite the hige time requirements remaining, its a natural reaction.
I hope blizz has figured this out for 10.0. Content is content… repetitive required game loops for 5+ months are only content in the most technical sense.
Some people will be fine with this… but a lot of us who have been playing for 10-15 years are just… grinded out.
Im perfectly fine with long-term grinds in an MMO.
In fact, I consider that part of the MMO experience.
But I don’t just want long term grinds, I also want meaningful content to do in order to make my character stronger.
Kill bosses, get loots.
WoW is, and always has been a Character progression RPG in my opinion. everything you do in this game is to facillitate your character getting stronger.
Very true i was playing hell bullet shooters for 4 months for awhile decided to give shadow lands one more chance before i go for good maybe ill stay not sure depends on patch content and next expansion info so i can grind in advance before it comes out.
