Why do you Wow?

With the 20th anniversary coming upon us, it’s making me quite nostalgic as to why I started playing wow and how I’m still in Azeroth 20 years later.

So, what makes you wow? Why do you still play?

I like raiding with my friends that still play WoW, so raid log is about all I do these days.

I was young at the time back when Wrath was out. My brother had a computer and I did not and I would watch him level his Tauren and show me quest he was doing.

When he was at school I would log on his account and make death knights and play through the TBC zones, not really knowing what I was doing.

I didn’t truly start playing the game till I got my own computer and Cataclysm was coming out. I remember logging my character out where I predicted the center of the Barrens to be, hoping I would fall into lava when I logged in.

I have a lot of love and memory tied to this game, even if it’s changed a great deal since when I started playing.

Nostalgia and I still love WoW even though the game isn’t in the greatest of places so I dip in and out of playing. I still like to do dungeons, there’s no other game that really does that well imo. Recently my 5 year old son has taken an interest in playing. He likes to fly around on dragons and explore different things, so that’s given me a new love for the game showing him around and spending time with him in that way (that’s not all we do, but it’s one activity we enjoy together).

I’m too lazy to make my own MMO.

I’ve been playing forever and it’s one of few things that’s been consistent in my life for two decades. Plus I just enjoy it’s casualness. It’s fun and a good time waster, and I can watch something or listen to an audiobook/podcast while I play.

I’ve been playing since 2009. I’ve got a lot of time and money invested, and I’ve met some pretty great people along the way, though I’ve parted ways with most of them at some point or another.

It has been quite a ride, and even though it hasn’t always been a pleasant one, I still enjoy playing the game. If I didn’t think it was worth it, I wouldn’t be here. Plain and simple.

My mother is who got me into it initially, I used to always watch her play her Gnome Mage back in TBC. She took a break for a while, and then around 2011 when Cataclysm was out she made a new account and I made my first character: a Bloodelf Hunter, it also was my first game addiction!

Many many many memories, alts, and main swaps later I am now a Nelf Resto Druid. I primarily play WoW nowadays for friends, M+, and raiding with my guild, I also just really enjoy healing in this game. I’ve had a lot of good memories come from WoW and I’ve met a lot of great people, I’ll stick around til the end more than likely.

Didn’t think I’d still be playing back when I was 9 and neither did my mother, but here I am at 21.

It really doesn’t feel like that long ago.

Something fun to do when it’s dark and/or rainy and/or cold outside.

I play because I enjoy playing with my friends and quite honestly, I like the community and i like m+, PVP, and raidin g.

Raiding was my primary motivator but I’ve been without a raid group for most of this expansion.

Game is fun

I started with a bunch of college friends. Only problem with that was for most it was a fad and they all quit within the first year or two (so started in 07 was solo by 09). By then I was accustomed to the game and I’ve found numerous reasons to stay ever since.

I like the amount of character customization, for one. People complain about it but very few single player games give you even this amount of options.

I like that people are there. I’m not very social and I prefer not to speak, but I do like the wild card, of, say, doing a five man with other people. It’s not as boring as if they were bots, even though the times you remember it sucking are generally when they are behaving very much not as a bot would.

I like the persistent world. Something about the fact that the world continues even after I log out just hits me right, is the only way I can put it. The auction house and stuff like that are player driven as well. It adds a level of dynamism that is just lacking in a single player game, where everything is decided in advance and you either adhere to it or suck at it.

So even though I don’t really do group content (that requires me to talk to people), I do appreciate that all that is there. It makes for a richer experience even if you do not directly engage with it.

This is the best RPG world even after 16 years. I’ve tried skyrim and various other games, they do not compare to the majesty that is this game.

I get kind of mad at like ghostcrawler being all like “todays game is too solo oriented we want to bring back the community.” Well, thanks for telling me where not to go. When this game was all about guilds and raiding I was a second class citizen. But now’s gonna be my time. I am having more fun than I’ve had in awhile and it will be even more fun in the future, I’m thinking.

I like that the game respects solo players much more than in the past. You could say that’s always been the draw, that this game respected solo players more than the rest of the field to the point that I now feel downright welcome here, despite not being a social butterfly.

I would be very surprised if I’m not here through 2030 when they wrap up the last of the three announced expansions. I suspect I will be at this either until my wife and I retire, so I don’t have hours alone to play, or until I’m so bad at mouse and keyboard that there’s no point in continuing.

I’m a lifer. I’m also a solo player, I duo with my brother but he only plays a couple months a year and then only a couple days a week. People can crap on solo play all they want but people like me are helping pay the bills. Respect us for our choices and we won’t complain that you are too social.

It takes all kinds, and in this era the game cannot afford to shed subs.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

WoW transmog/collections.

Many varied races. Other mmos aren’t as varied. They’re typically just different humans with altered looks.

The lore… at times.

Been invested in the series since WC1.

Flying. I refuse to play any mmo that lacks flying…

Druid, Hunter and Warlock. No other mmo has ever been able to come close to what WoW has achieved with these classes. I would play ff14 more if it had a job that was like BM Hunter.

My friends pestered me to play for months and I finally gave in and started a few months after Mists launched. They no longer play ofc lol I still play because I like the world.

Because I am disabled and have no life, literally spend all my time at home with no social ring to communicate with. I’m too broken to really walk around outside but Warcraft, I can do warcraft if I ignore all the group content so I don’t feel like I’m letting people down.

You should be a BM Hunter!

Then you’ll always have loyal allies with you.

In 2005 was visiting friend and saw him and his brother playing, was intrigued. plus, since we no longer lived close together and couldn’t visit as often, it seemed like an easy way to keep in touch online. Guess that it’s just a hard addiction to quit.
