Why do we still have Versatility and Mastery?

Since many masteries have become homogenized into flat % increases why do we still have both these stats? Most of the masteries in game are like “Frost Damage increased” “Chaos Damage increased” “Pet Damage increased” Destro Lock mastery is literally a random versatility. It’s so boring that we still have both Vers and Mastery in game, but something like Multistrike was removed for being too similar to Crit. Would just be nice for some kind of change moving forward.

I assume the only real difference between the two is how much % you get per point. You probably get more mastery per point, but with vers it’s all damage instead of just a part of your damage plus you get the half damage negation thing.

I do agree it might be too similar though. Seems like at least for the specs I play one is always wanted and the other is not. Then itemization seems to give you more of the one you don’t need, go figure. I’ve never had a properly weighted character and I’ve pretty much given up on ever getting there.

I just use the best ilvl gear I have and hope for the best a lot of the time. Things like rings/neck I might choose one over another, but a lot of slots there isn’t much in the way of options, like I’m not going to not convert a piece to tier even if the tier piece has a secondary stat I don’t really need, etc.

Versa is mostly for PVP I think

Vers allows for defensive builds/ better at taking damage for like soloing and heavy aoe fights.

Mastery is nice because its so different based on spec. Could be trash, could be your best stat. Many talents make these stats weigh more/less. For example the demonhunter talent that turns all magic into chaos damage increases the value of your mastery! Which I find nice. Some talents make haste/crit more appealing. Some characters just have talents that make vers the best.

versatility is go-to pvp stat, since it gives you some damage (less than other stats) and makes you take less damage (which is mostly irrelevant in pve for dps)

All these people commenting that Vers is the “pvp stat”. You don’t say, I’m a multi-gladiator, I’m aware it’s mostly a pvp stat, but there’s no reason it should be on ANY PvE gear if it’s going to be “the pvp stat”

Yea man but did you know vers is good in pvp

I mean, haste is just getting faster gcd, crit is just to sometimes hit harder, they’re not really any special. There are other stats so there’s diversity and let’s not kid ourselves, it’s so that you keep hunting for gear without those stats if your class doesn’t like them.

And by the way there’s a handful of dps specs that really like vers.

We once had a secondary stat just for pvp… whatever happened to resilience anyways? It seemed like a good idea.

Just signed up to let you know that vers is really helpful in PvP

Problem with resilience is that it’s a useless stat in pve. You’d get owned if you didn’t have any, and you’d do crap damage in pve if you just had that. At least with current stats you have a fighting chance.

all healers and tanks run some stat + vers in m+

Uhhh Vers and Mastery are still good for multiple specs in pve.

I really think that blizz should make mastery important to every spec. Doesnt necessarilly need to be the best stat for all, but it should be something the spec cares about.

As already mentioned, most masteries are simply X% more of Y, this is terribly boring and uninteractive. 2 examples of more interesting masteries are windwalker and elemental. Windwalker is certainly the most active mastery in the game, seeing as your entire rotation is locked into it. Elemental is more passive, but its clear when you overload, and as you accrue more, you overload more and gain even more resource, a very positive loop!

If more specs had masteries that actually lean into the fantasy and can be felt/seen, I think a lot of people would be happier!

tanks want it. And just to give freedom for the player to build any stat they want

I wish mine was a flat healing or damage increase instead of a mastery that 90% of the time provides 0 value because i’m not about to go stand next to a frost mage and dh

As a tank, i love it. I even have a talent that boosts my Versatility while in Bear Form.

gonna be hard to stand near DH when they constantly felrush and retreat to keep Momentum buff up

Those stats give blizzard multitudes more options when trying to balance specs etc…

Hey you shut your pie hole OP, Enhancement Shaman Mastery is one of our massive damage passives!
