Why do we call damage dealer specs DPS? (damage per second)

It still boggles my mind.

I guess I see your point, I would think “damage dealer” or “DD” would make more sense

dps is the derivative of damage. it is a normalized value since time flows at same speed for everyone alive.

other games do call them DD.

I’d rather be called dps instead of double d…

Also why do we call damage soakers, tanks?

If a movie tanks, it means it did badly, but if a bear tanks it means she can hold threat and not die.

What about a dwarf tank using tankards?

You can put fish in a tank using a tankard, but it’s much harder to put a dwarf in a tank

Because Double D is reserved for something else

Lots of random reasons, but to me its because damage per second is the value of the spec. Tanks and (sometimes) healers “deal damage”, but the dps specs are focused on dealing high damage per second, that is their purpose; not to simply deal damage but to deal it out at a high rate.

Also “DD” looks and sounds stupid, IMO anyway

I tend to use “ranged, melee, tank, and healer”.

Because DPS is a dime a dozen.

A tank is the anchor for the group. Without them the group will get swept away.

The healer is the ship, they keep everyone’s head above water.

DPS are the fat, greedy tourists on vacation, rubber necking at all the sights while downing copious amounts of buffet food and constantly taking pictures, desperate for souvenirs so they can eat buffet food and take pictures faster on their next tour.

You don’t need a damage dealer, that’s a person, you just need some DPS and any tourist will do.

Bad take.

If we’re using a boat analogy then the DPS are the motor, without which the boat would not be able to move.

Nah dude, tanks and healers are the most specialist ever and every DPS should properly worship the ground they walk on. /s

Why do we drive on a parkway yet park on a driveway?
