Why do some classes have weapons when they clearly don't use them?

Mages, hands.
Druids, hands.
monk hands
lock hands

whats the point of having a staff?

Uh, if you want to bonk monsters with a large stick, literally nothing prevents you.

but why can’t we cast spells with the staff

Monks are getting a glyph to get their weapon attack back.

yeah with one ability woohoo

I’m not sure what argument you are attempting to make.

It sounds like your asking why they have main hand off hand items while also having 2h items.

A lot of that has to do with classes being the driving factor of what weapons it can use but the roles having definitively designed weapons that fit into one or the other category. Classes also have a foundation in general RP fantasy as traditionally using a particular weapon type. However, for balancing reasons they offer multiple options to make up for how random the drops can be and to ensure more people can potentially use the items that drop. The more unique items that only certain classes can use the worse RNG gets with randomized loot pools.

Generally casters have both a one hand and off hand option to pair with a 2h option. Sometimes the off-hand is a shield (in the case of shaman and paladins).

Edit

I realize in hindsight your talking about the classes who have weapons but don’t use them in their animations.

This has to do with thematics of the classes in traditional fantasy where some classes use a focus to cast spells and others can just cast them without them. Those items provide bonuses but some classes require them to cast the spell themselves and others don’t. In some cases hand motions are actually the medium of certain spell casting.

Animation cost reasons. Also, you can’t even see wtf you are doing in group content. Any more animations would be bad imo unless they can fix the visibility.

Because the developers have chosen to work on other things besides the dozens of new animations it would take, given the variety of weapons they’d have to work with.

It’s doable, but how many raid tiers do you want to give up for a purely cosmetic glow-up?

No? they want to stand and wave their staff while they attack, not use their hands.

The weapons have stats in them.

Spellcasters use 1H swords, off hands, or staves like a magic conduit. In DnD terms, they use these tools to get a more accurate tap into what creates and weaves their modern world through supernatural means. In WoW terms, ley lines. Though Priests prefer the term, “words of power”. Which doesn’t really matter, because they too are created by ley lines. Or so the theory goes.

Either way, they often use their sharp minds as weapons. Not physical objects.

Also, monks aren’t so much spellcasters. Save mist weavers.

As it should be.

In lore it would be because those magic users are using the weapon as a foci for their spells, and that doesn’t require that they hold it. Even lore characters like Jaina and Khadgar don’t always hold their staff when casting spells in cinematics, so it’s definitely not some limitation of the game’s engine with animations (that Blizzard could customize for the moment anyway if they wanted)

For Monk that’s Blizzard being lazy, but they’re taking us back to MoP/WoD behavior with a glyph in TWW.

To smush the fluffy bunnies with.

It would be better if the animations used your weapon. I’m sure it’s not because we would need a lot of new animations.

But holding a cool fire stave would be a lot more meaningful if it actually shot fireballs.

several actually, an entire expansion without them

and use that money to make genuinely good open world content, more dungeons and rework / improve the many systems (including classes) that need it

i want to know why monks can wield axes when they dont ever use them.

Sometimes I miss City of heroes (another mmo from 2004) that let you costumize animation, spell colors and more :/. Sadly the dev always say the development of new animation take a lot of work (I only worked with blender to make some minor animation for mods for Skyrim but really was a thing of some weeks of free time)

You don’t have to miss it anymore.

For show and for style. When I’m specced resto I like to tmog the legion weapons, as they only appear when wielding. So as a resto shaman I only ever have a elemental specced shield and enhancement doomhammer weapon that never shows on my toon. It’s neat. It would be nice to have a customizable option to not show weapons, but that’s lead to some odd appearances I bet… melee specs goin at it with fisticuffs lmao
