Why do players rely on Macros instead of skill?

I see so many players relying on macros as if they are necessary to play their class. But they are not. They are just a way to skip a bunch of steps to make things faster and easier, without relying on timing and skill.

I like knowing what I am pressing. Having macros makes everything feel so cheap. I’ll never understand why people use macros instead of just learning to play correctly.

Other than making buttons hit multiple abilities with one press, what are the other reasons to use macros?

I want to use them but I feel like I’m using cheat codes and feel dirty or something. I don’t want shortcuts but it seems like everyone uses them.

I love macro users. They blow everything all at once and you kite them till everything drops, then they emote you knowing they lost.

they created a macro and saw big numbers on baddies that back pedal and think they are gods until they meet someone that knows how to either live lord or negate their idiocy in pvp.

I say use whatever makes this game the most interesting and fun for you.

Totally understand this but let’s face it, ED hasn’t been known for PvP of any kind since at least 4 maybe 5 xpacs ago. I mean Blizz had no trouble making Emerald Dream an RP realm. Lol.

  1. Modifying default targeting for an ability. For example, I can have spells like Death & Decay or Angelic Feather that normally require a target to be selected with a template to instead just target my character. So in the case of Death & Decay, it just drops it centred on my position. In the case of Angelic Feather, it is basically just making it operate like Death’s Advance, skipping the targeting step.
  2. I also assign gestures like /wave, /thanks, /salute, etc. and I also have ‘target nearest friendly player’ set to tilde, so I can quickly target someone and wave, for example, as I’m running by them. Maybe it’s a guild member. Maybe its a random player that got me out of trouble with an elite mob. It’s just nice to be able to do those reflexively rather than typing out the commands.

Oh like this one I use for my Augmentation Evoker? It sets the TANK to my target of my Blistering Scales ability in another macro called “BS”.

/run for i=1,5 do local role=UnitGroupRolesAssigned(“party”…i) if role==“TANK” then local name=GetUnitName(“party”…i, true) local str=“#showtooltip Blistering Scales\n/cast [@”…name…“] Blistering Scales” EditMacro(“BS”,nil,nil,str,1,1) end end

I then have another macro “BS” that I put on the key bind (Q in my case)
#showtooltip Blistering Scales
/cast [@Captain Garrick] Blistering Scales

Otherwise I’d have to target the tank every time it came off cooldown or ran out of charges and then cast it. With the speed in which dungeon groups move it’s a lifesaver.

Blistering Scales isn’t available for click casting. I suppose I could use Healbot or similar but I’m not a healer and it doesn’t work well with Aug.

I use macros to remove bloat, and mouse over’s, and focus target macros. Reason being. If you’re faster than your opponent. You are going to kill them first.
