People are clearing naxx in a hour and a half on a regular basis so i dont understand why there is still a mentality that no one can be shadow or enhance or ret or feral or boomkin, you would still clear naxx but oh lord it might be in 1 hour 31 mins…why are people still tryhard in this game so much so that some peoples enjoyment is over shadowed by neck beards?
And yes i raid as 2h fury i still do well and have fun doing so
Depends on who you surround yourself with. I’ve been able to enjoy doing some casual raiding in the 20 player raids and such and just have had a great time. I’m a sub rogue and don’t necessarily do a lot of DPS compared to dedicated raid specs, but we clear and have a good time all around.
You can play as a meme spec, but certainly wouldn’t want a whole raid of them xD
People are just obsessed with playing the game in a mathematically perfect fine tuned manner. People don’t think you can be meme specs for the same reason they think warriors need to be orc or humans. You can clear all the content in the game as a meme spec just fine. The only really challenging raid in the game for anyone is naxx.
Someone on my Classic server set up a 40-man shaman MC. A guildy was in it. it was fun to watch.
Really though it’s about people wanting to be efficient, do it “properly”, and not carry anyone. Do I agree with this? Not really. My guild in Classic raided with an enhance shammy because we liked the guy, as well as two feral druids. Maybe there is a guild out there for people who play offspecs or someone who really wants to fill spots with whoever.
Because 1.5hr Naxx clears involve full world buffs. And if you are raiding fully world buffed, it would be dumb to bring anything other than warriors and mages for damage. They scale too well with the extra stats.
Shadow priests are actually great in Naxx when world buffs are not part of the equation. Even better if no debuff limit.
Balance/feral druids fill a valuable flex slot (you want a lot of healers for Loatheb/4HM/Sapph/KT, but not as many healers for other bosses).
Paladins could be used in Naxx as trash tanks. Holy wrath + righteous fury. Judgements are also useful when no debuff limit.
Ele shaman is a PvP build. But enhancement shaman with nightfall is pretty useful when there is no debuff limit.
Because if you bring 1 meme build suddenly 1/3 of the raid will want to bring meme/pvp specs in too, and that 1.5hr naxx becomes a 3 hour naxx cuz people die, lose world buffs, and now maybe u cant kill saph and kt in 1 night or you wipe on patchwork ect…
Guilds are getting 1.5hr naxxes by minmaxing, as soon as you lax on the rules/requirements the runs get sloppy and it gets exponentially more difficult/time consuming
That’s totally a leadership call though, and leadership doesn’t have to say yes to 1/3 of the raid being meme specs just like leadership can say zero meme specs.
Plus, maybe it’s not this way with Classic Era but in general, the majority want to play whatever puts out the best numbers and if that changes they’ll reroll to whatever does.
With that being said the comments all fall in line with my statement of “wanting to be efficient, do it “properly”, and not carry anyone”. I do agree that if you stop min-maxing the raids take longer and you may wipe etc, but there can definitely be a balance. Taking one or two meme players won’t matter but it’s certainly way easier and more in line with set standards for leadership to just say “Nope, we min max only”.
Also for Axewipe, in Classic I raided with plenty of people playing meme specs. There was a ret pally who was not the GL or an officer but was so loved by his guild that, not only did he raid as ret, they farmed him scarab lord. It’s not just some WB thing even if SoM changed the meta up a little.
Bringing a few meme specs isn’t gonna grief the raid, but allowing it in the first place just opens pandoras box a lot of the time.
People will want to do the same and the raid lead has to tell people no at a certain point and then it becomes “unfair” that players A B and C gets to be a meme specs while player D cant because the raid comp starts to suffer.
And then you’ll have people “accidentally” showing up in pvp specs, but its fine, cuz player A is playing a meme spec thats worse dps than my pvp spec so its whatever and then after a few weeks the raid just starts slacking.
Its one of those slippery slope situations that becomes tedious to manage

My classic guild had 3 feral druids (down to 2 by Naxx, not because we cut anyone but because #3 just quit), a balance druid, and we wished we had a shadow priest in Naxx. I’m pretty familiar with hybrids in classic.
We actually had to learn Naxx back then. Learning Loatheb/Sapphiron with a shadow priest is 1000x easier than learning them without one. But once you have the fight down, cutting the shadow priest for a world buffed warrior is always the play.
Without world buffs and without a debuff limit: you probably just keep the shadow priest.
not in my experience
my raids almost always brought along a few “pets” like ret pallies and moonkins. they were a fun addition and did not detract from our fast clear times
the ret pally was the butt of a lot of jokes though, it’s true. but all in good fun.
Non-holy paladin specs are the worst raiding builds in classic. Their best use is probably to off-tank trash, deal damage on easier bosses, and heal the harder bosses. But there aren’t many situations where they can more easily tank something than a warrior.
I could see it in a no world buff Naxx. Those pulls before Patchwerk are perfect for a holy wrath + consecration bomb. Paladin could keep all of those mobs in place for the mages to AoE, warriors can’t.
Then again, if you have world buffed warriors, there is no point. World buffed warriors kill things so quickly that it wouldn’t matter. This only makes sense w/o buffs.
Also, a holy paladin could just do that job… you don’t NEED to be ret or prot to tank trash. Just wear plate and press holy wrath + consecration.
