Why do people take time off for video games?

I have to admit, this kind of strikes me odd, that someone would schedule vacation time to play a video game the day it comes out.

Not criticizing it. You do you. Your time, your money.

I just don’t understand it. If you’re not bucking for World First or some other time-sensitive achievement, why rush? The game will still be here on Day 2, 3, 10, 30…

Are you aware that people in mmos like to be ahead of others and not be vastly behind their friends/guild in levels or gear? Or maybe to play with friends, or experience the game first before people spoil it, or a million other reasons? I honestly can’t believe you wrote this in good faith without giving 5 seconds of critical thought to your question.

For the same reason some people take off to go fishing or some other hobby. People enjoy a thing and want to have some stress free time doing it. It’s not a hard concept.

Why do people take time off to do anything they enjoy?

So they can finish all the content as fasts possible so they can come back to GD and complain they are bored and have nothing to do.

Fishing will still be here on Day 2, 3, 10, 30…
The ability to physical move to other landmasses (traveling) will still be here on Day 2, 3, 10, 30… to literally eternity
Sports, however boring they are to watch, will still be here on Day 2, 3, 10, 30…

I’m not sure what the end-game of this post was. I feel like this was a red-herring thread to try and get a rise out of everyone that is upset about Shadowlands being delayed, but I could be wrong. Among Us knows I’ve been very, VERY wrong before.

  1. I get 5 weeks of PTO a year.
  2. I can not afford to take 5 weeks of vacation - some of that is going to be a staycation (usually 4 weeks). Might as well use it for something I enjoy. I spend a good chunk of staycations gaming anyway.
  3. I enjoy the game. I want to level with my friends and my guildies. Many of them also booked time off.
  4. I’m new to the game and I’m really excited for my first expansion. So I want to dive right in.
  5. I’m on medication which means I sleep A LOT. On work days, I have maybe 1 hr I can game. I want to be able to sink my teeth into the new game early. Taking PTO means I can do that.

Ultimately though, I have 5 weeks PTO and I enjoy wow. So why not?

If I only had 1 or 2 weeks PTO I probably wouldn’t. But thankfully I’m not in that situation.

What part don’t you understand? World of Warcraft has been around for 16 years. Over that course of time, it has built up an enormous fanbase that spans across the entire world. It allows us to get our minds off the daily grinds and stresses of life and we get to enjoy an experience in a fantasy fictionalized universe of Azeroth.

If you can’t understand why then that’s a you issue because to me, it’s very easy to see why.

Since I’m starting to see this argument more and more I’m starting to think it’s people who just have a problem with the “Blizz I took off for SL” complaint threads. On the forums people like to address threads by making their own threads which I find odd lol.

Wage slavery is soul-crushing.

Oh I just want to enjoy the experience. Me and my roommate both take-off launch of expacs, and marathon run our way to max level and get everything situated. I agree that there isnt a huge rush ( I mean, if you want to be competitive, at least being max level by the end of the first week and having your weekly stuff in order is probably ideal), but that really isnt my main goal anyways.
It is probably not dissimilar to seeing a movie on opening night. It is not necessary to enjoy the movie, but there is an experience there none the less.

Luckily I work my own schedule and can take off time from work when I please, so I don’t need to worry about scheduling time off only for the event I am doing for it to be delayed. That said though I do feel for those that can’t reschedule, though I blame their employers more then Blizz on that one.

Before I was self-employed, I used to take vacation days and just sit on my porch, start drinking at 11 AM, and feel no regrets. At least when you take off for a video game you have a goal and purpose…lol

For games like WoW, or games like Cyberpunk 2077 (large, giant world games that you can really dive into) it’s nice to have time off to enjoy it, if that’s what you want to use your time off for.

For those who are in bad jobs that don’t give them paid time off (which is quite a lot in the US), saving money to be able to enjoy it is a hard thing and being forced to waste it sucks.

I don’t know about others, but I’m not complaining about that. You do you.

However, I don’t understand why even bother taking time off on release date/week. I mean, there are always bugs on release date/week. Remember Legion? WoD? And if you’re thinking about answering “Catching up with your friends/gears so they won’t fall behind!” It’s the first week dude, you have plenty of time.

It’s the hobby I enjoy, I took a week off at the start of the year to travel across the country to play tabletop wargames. I don’t care for travelling, and at this time, you can’t really anyway. Taking a week off for uninterrupted play of the new expansion, being able to spend the day chatting with friends on discord, experiencing the new game together is the perfect way I want to spend my time off work.

(Query): Why take time off for vacations? Surely you can squeeze a day or two into the weekend, no? Why take time off for a convention? They’re mostly on the weekends, right? Why take time off to do anything?

(Commentary): Why people take time off is entirely their business. For some people, getting to play a video game uninterrupted is the closest they get to a vacation.

Because… people like the game? I’m confused as to how you don’t understand that
