So 2004?
Here’s the secret: Warcraft’s story has never been good. It was in the right place at the right time to capture the hearts and minds of a bunch of nerdy adolescent boys as an RTS game on PC when PC game pickings were slim.
It had tired tropes (wow a fallen knight and a bargain for power), overly edgy heroes (omg he’s BLIND and has GLAIVES), and a distinct lack of definitive direction (SCOURGE BUT LEGION BUT ILLIDAN BUT ORCS BUT ARCHIMONDE BUT MEDIVH BUT…).
Enjoy it for what it is, or don’t. But don’t say the story has gotten worse. You just grew up.
This is me. WoW was the least worst option of mmos to play right now. I don’t really agree this is the “best” the writing has been, but it certainly isn’t the worst. That was DF, no contest.
;-; T-T
Its bad, characters are poorly written, but too many people today don’t have much critical thinking skills so; they enjoy it.
Good for them, bad for the rest of us.
They have been involved with each other actively since BFA, and passively since Legion.
Tell me you know nothing about the lore or Alleria without saying so.
They heard the Radiant Song, were looking for Anduin, and found themselves ultimately at Dalaran and got mixed into it. Then realized they needed armies for the upcoming fight so they went to get the Horde and Alliance respectively.
Because they were at Dalaran, are beloved characters, and we know that Aethas Sunreaver is focusing on helping the citizens of Dalaran to pick up their lives again. Also, it is not even patch 0.5 yet.
A mixture of all over the place, dead, retired, or out of action.
Go to Azj-Kahet and do the quests.
Do the raid and see what happens next.
No, and all sane folks disagree with you.
Go and do the quests in Hallowfall; read, learn, explore. You’ll learn a whole lot more than whining on the forums.
Do the quests and you’ll find out most of the answers to every complaint you had here.
Mildly humorous troll post, but still quite boring. I rate it 1 oliphant out of 10 cats with the zoomies.
So she’s not supposed to care that a big evil is literally destroying a major city and massacring a bunch of innocent civilians? What?
It is understandable that Khadgar and her are friends from the Sons of Lothar time - but Alleria has been 1000 years removed from Khadgar that this level of hatred is questionable.
So just because she hasn’t seen her dear friend in a long time means she suddenly should just not care about them getting killed? Especially by the same person massacring the afore mentioned entire city. Who is also a Void emissary. Really?
Why wasnt Vereesa being used as the lynch pin for this? At least then, it would be somewhat more understandable than handwaving her out of Dalaran. She never gets used anyways outside of standing around in the background and has essentially been replaced by Alleria (Sorry high elf fans, but its true).
Everyone was gathered in Dal to group up to fight the Void threat of Xal’atath. I guess Vereesa could have also been there, but expecting Alleria to NOT be there just makes zero sense. Concerns about Vereesa not being used enough is a whole seperate conversation to why Alleria is the focal character in a building battle against Xal’atath and the Void (which should be self-explanatory).
I think folks are so used to seeing story elements with solely existing characters and/or stories that introduce new characters being mishandled and poorly paced (cough-SL-cough, cough-some of DF-cough) that they’ve forgotten what an actual properly executed “slow build”/properly paced story looks like.
It makes perfect sense for Alleria and Xal’atath to have a specific targeted rivalry. And Xal’atath is clearly intentionally trolling Alleria for the purposes of pushing her plans forward. And Alleria is 100% impulsively taking the bait every time because she is not in a good head space to reasonably think things through due to everything else that’s messed up in her life because of the Void (which has been messed up for a VERY long time). It’s likely one of the main reasons (beyond just the Void connection) XT singled her out for mind games. Alleria is the perfect pawn for XT’s plans because she’s been so easily and predictably triggerable.
Why are Thrall and Jaina even here? They do essentially nothing other than call in their factions to come help and then do nothing.
Well a ton of powerful people are hearing the call of the World Soul. We saw Thrall confirm he’s been hearing it (he even says that many others have as well). We know Anduin & Khadgar have as well obviously. Jaina hearing them (along with probably every other main Alliance, Horde and other major non-Alliance/Horde power players) is kind of a given.
Plus, with the Alliance and the Horde attempting to actually work together again properly, it makes sense for the folks leading the charge in that direction to be Thrall and Jaina. They have a very long established history of being able to work together and get the folks following them to work together if not amiably, then at least civilly. If the Alliance and the Horde are sincerely trying to move forward with a true and honest peace (or at least an armistice), Jaina and Thrall are clearly the best leaders to take point in that regard. Not to mention, Jaina kind of sat out of DF and SL for the most part after playing a big role in BfA (for obvious reasons). So it’s been a while since we’ve really seen her.
Cool. So you are telling me - that a city of mages with some of the STRONGEST MAGES and magic users couldnt be used instead. Why bother showing Meryl Felstorm, Aethas Sunreaver, or even Ritssyn if you are not going to do anything with them? Wheres the Council of Six?
They were there because their primary operations are in Dalaran (Aethas for obvious reasons, and the locks because the portal to Dreadscar Rift - the Lock Order Hall from Legion, is there)
They were obviously doing stuff through Dal during the battle, but we were pretty much following after/trying to reach Alleria the whole time. I’ll admit it would have been nice to see more of them in action in the background. But assuming they didn’t do anything is rather silly. We literally see Ritssyn impaled on one of the horns to the portal to Dread Scar rift. So he clearly made a bee line to the sewers and was there when the city went boom. Same is obviously true for the others. They obviously were doing things while the city was under siege. Notice how everyone in the Rogue Orderhall had cleared out too when we used it to get the survivors past the nerubian kill squads. We just didn’t happen to cross paths with them in our rush to save people and reach Alleria.
BTW, we should probably do something about recovering that portal to Dreadscar from the beach. And I wonder if that also means we’ve been cut off from the Netherlight Temple as well since the portal there was also in Dal (hmmm a tidbit that could be forshadowing of things to come in the next tiers or even Midnight?).
Why put an emphasis on Ansurek’s reign if you arent going to show her or do anything with her at all? She has only shown up TWICE to do literally nothing and she is being built up to be the big bad of the patch as the raid final boss - Razsageth had better build-up than this and felt contrived. Denathrius was eons better than this.
She’s literally the boss of the 1st raid tier. And pretty much everything in the Azj-Kahet portion of the campaign AND all of the side quests in the zone tell the story of what’s going on with the Ansurek’s Nerubians and how they (and specifically Ansurek) were the first real step in Xal’atath’s plans.
This feels like Blizzard had no idea what to do and painted themselves into a corner with this initial patch since they cant fight Xal just yet - and Iridikon hasnt shown up at all.
This just feels like impatience based on the entire story not having been told yet because we just started it.
There are any number of ways they can go as far as the next main antagonist for the next tier. There are plenty of Light, Void, Arathi, and character elements from the current tier story that can be expanded upon logically to continue based on what’s already been established.
SPEAKING OF ANDUIN. Hallowfall is garbage. I was expecting to learn more about the Arathi, as they are this long forgotten branch of the old Arathorian people who build this great Empire - but I instead get Anduin talking about how he cannot channel the Light because he feels unworthy…huh? Why are we doing this plot when the literal trailer had Thrall go “stop moping around, its not doing anything to help you”? An entire zone that doesnt EVEN resolve Anduin’s black hole plot that sacrificed any cool culture or storytelling about the Empire outside of their two points of Light empire and they like cat who have the “zoomies” and “Beans” - heckin’ epic Reddit humour bro. Thank god theres all those books about Arathi culture - what do you mean its only revolving around their time in Hallowfall and nothing else?
Honestly Anduin’s struggle is only a relatively small part of the story told through Hallowfall. The campaign portion did that pretty well too. And it just gets deeper and even more fleshed out from the additional quests in the zone. Simply casually questing around the zone tells you a metric ton about the Hallowfall Arathi’s history and the day to day lives of the people. If you don’t know anything about the Arathi in Hallowfall, you either:
- skipped through/weren’t paying attention to anything said (audibly and in the text) during the campaign
- Haven’t done any quests in the zone outside of the campaign (which was I’m guessing you didn’t pay attention to)
- Haven’t actually thought about what’s happening with any of the World Quests going on in the zone
- Some combination of the above options
Staying with Hallowfall - Priory feels SO disconnected from the plot, I wonder if Blizzard changed this storyline prior to release. So we meet these two brothers where one dies…and somehow this turns into the Prioress being a light-dominance would-be conqueror with Light undead. No, there is no jump cut - that is EXACTLY how it is presented. And yes, these are the only times both the undead and the idea of world domination come up at all. Why?
Yeah, it’s pretty clear you weren’t actually paying attention to what was being done and said during that quest at all. Honestly, it looks like you may need to slow down a bit and actually take in the details and situation presented in the quests (assuming you don’t just not do them at all).
That’s the sense I’m getting from a mostly “outside perspective” (haven’t played the latest expansion myself).
It’s an improvement compared to older stories, especially BfA and SL, but that bar is LOW and even basic competency looks impressive. Put it under scrutiny and/or compare to more accomplished works, and its shortcomings become very clear,
Being honest? Curb your expectations.
While Metzen is definitely better-received than the last guy(s)… much of his work is still on Blizz IPs, and they are not known for being that great narratively.
A modest improvement over WoW’s better points is a reasonable expectation at this stage, not something impressive.
Your summary is just so many levels of bad I can’t even begin to reply to it all
There’s a few weird things with the story but basically none of the things you mention have any issues.
Story for tww is a solid 7/10… Way better than SL and dragon flight
Archmage Modera apparently survived but I’m not sure if she’s actually seen again. I’m still suspicious that some of the Council of Six members could be traitors, and that’s why some of them have not shown up again yet.
Iridikron probably won’t show up again at all until TLT. He’s currently a background villain who won’t make his move until the time is right. Iridikron specifically wants to kill the Titans.
Too busy in the succubus pit.
OP thought he was cooking with this post only to find out he’s the one in the wrong
Not to mention, there’s a whole achievement and toy wrapped up into Arathi lore, which is what people asked for (reading in game instead of having to go read a novel written outside game).
