Why do people get offended by names with special symbols?

These days, there is pretty much no need to type someone’s name. You copy someone name pretty easily, group invites can be done by premade, you can always give someone a nickname and on rp realms you can just use an addon to rename someone. Weird really. Some people dispite all this seem to feel legitimately offended by someone with special symbols in their name.

Nobody is offended by them, they are just annoying and dumb looking.

Not offended, it’s just the thought: “you couldn’t come up with an original name using regular letters? really?”

I don’t get offended at special characters, I only get irrationally angry when people use an Eszett (ß) as a “B”.

I always assumed that the people that have funny symbols in their name do that for privacy, the only problem is when they want to be invited for a guild well I don’t know how to type it out, don’t ask me for a guild invite if you got a funny symbol sign up for it instead.

Offended, not but when I see someone that is blatantly over using them for no reason I tend to just think they are attention seeking.

To be fair, the naming restrictions are just dumb where some names are taken only to know that it is belonging to an inactive player.

Thankfully, my ASCII letters 5 times out of 10 usually have some meanings.

Locutus is basically latin. Hence the accent of the ‘u’.

On top of that, I really like naming my characters referencing other franchises nowadays such as: Veritania and Navali.

Other times it is completely original with a meaning that nobody else knows other than myself: Svayndif and Kaeleis.

Some names are taken in certain realms, others are free. But yea, name restrictions are dumb.

I once made a DH named Altcode but each letter was an altcode then I had to send mail to him and I was like … I don’t remember the alt code for the A :grimacing:

Not well thought out

I’ve since renamed him and won’t be doing that again. This doesn’t answer OPs question but I thought I’d share my story with you all

Scene from a 30 year old film.

Not offended, just a mild “Oh, you’re still into the self branding thing” annoyance.

I did it on this toon - But I had a reason.

That reason is because the word my character is named after has a 4 letter word that’s banned from names (You can take a wild guess), despite the actual full word - not being offensive (Simply means seeded life upon a planet, which I found fitting for a druid).

Other than that, I feel it kind of takes away from the player that originally had the name. Unless by some chance you did a faction swap and throughout the processing time-frame someone stole your name (Happened to me on another toon, was super cheesed off) of which case I’d be petty and special character it to flip them off passive-aggressively.

As long as I don’t have to try and type it to chat to someone, it doesn’t matter.

People getting offended sounds like something that’s been made up, but then I remembered the country I live in.

If I can’t type it, I don’t like it!
