Why do people find WoW's story compelling?

It helps if you disconnect the “savior of the planet” thing from your character. For one, most people wouldn’t KNOW you’d done such a thing, and now with Chromie time, it’s not necessarily true for every character you play, even if you’re treated like it during x expansion.

Plus the world is fun and the questlines are actually pretty well done most of the time.

Idk. I use to Love the story… it is simple and yet fun. Though the recent couple expansions have been kind of lacking for me. I am still interested in it enough to continue somewhat… The story for the game is really suffering from a power creep problem and a bit of over design and overreaching. Generally though i am still somewhat interested in the main story… i think side quests are starting to lack more than they use to tho… much more than the main story line.

It’s compellingly bad.

its great if you dont look too deep into it and just be like “Woah Sylvanas just blew up the sky?!”

It’s great because you can tell how Blizz is trying to take themselves seriously with their writing but then they end up looking like a total joke that causes a bunch of people to freak out. Ngl but the drama really is the cherry on top

The story was good, but now it’s not since they keep retconning lore. Look at the Chronicle books as examples. Retconning lore like they do means they don’t have good writing or ideas that can flow off of the lore they had in place.

I thought bfa was so terrible for story. No logic, characters not in character. If I do play shadowlands ill be skipping any and all story.

Nothing has ever attracted me to the story, this is just everquest with a bad story but much better gameplay. That I’ve been at for 13 years. Actual Everquest could have held that spot if only they’d lightened up on punishment, the entire reason I’m here is that I don’t literally lose a night’s worth of grinding when I die. Not even Classic is that punishing.

I also think the strength of EQ was it didn’t try too hard to tell a story, but it made you feel like you were in an actual world full of fun and interesting races. This game is, like I said, the story/world-poorer but gameplay-richer cousin, is all.

It should also be noted that I did not come through the RTS games, those were always a nightmare any time my friends convinced me to try one. So literally everything that made this company what it is is completely lost on me.

I was initially into the story but became so annoyed by the constant retconning, potential story that was cut due to constraints (quite a bit happened during WoD), and character desicions that could have been done better.

That cinematic also has a dude punching a dragon in the face, honestly that cinematic is fun and does rule of cool better than WoW cinematics while still showing off new expansion features well. If you haven’t give the whole thing a watch, it’s fun

Every game has a there/story to make it compelling, perhaps not Tetris. In Warcraft it is what I believe binds the whole game together. In the beginning, when players were just apart of the the story, there was a balance between all the major storyline characters. I would argue, that was Metzen’s universe. Yes it was very cheesy, like a AD&D game, but everyone loved it because no one element was really good or evil. It was like a daytime soap. The people who made it loved their creation, and that captivates an audience.

Enter Activision and corporate mentality as it ate away at this fun storyline that leaves us with this abomination. You can tell that this was written by a committee versus a singular driving creative force. The story sucks now, I personally hate all the characters and continue play out of routine. This is the game I am most familiar with and really do not want to learn something else. I am what the corporation counts on, but they have lost millions of customers because the story sucks. It is no longer compelling, the people that write it do not love the game as they once did.

That is why I find the story awful, but I have friends that are like you. It’s just pixels and they could care less what the story it. The story still needs to be there, it is just that they do not care about the characters as much.

Sometimes its amusing to watch a garbage fire burn.

Still. The prospect of war and carnage is always an intriguing prospect.

I like the lore and the storytelling, and find it to be one of the most compelling parts of the game. It’s trendy to hate on everything they do these days, so I don’t think they could have written anything that could make someone who doesn’t care about the lore already, care.

I’m not a passive consumer of stories in an RPG like I would be watching a movie or reading a book. i’m playing a character in this world, constantly imagining that’s characters’ own internal monologue as they travel. The story the game presents me is essentially a series of writing prompts to give me a background of lore and news against which to play my character.

I find Wow’s story and lore gives me material I’ve been able to work with. I don’t play in enough different IPs to judge if it could be done better, but I’m not unhappy here.

To me a game cannot lack two things, Story and Gameplay. Back in the day I use to skip the story because I thought it was meaningless. Although the gameplay was good back then when I started playing, when I focused on the story, it made my leveling more fun because the story does actually get good at some parts and some of them is very cheesy and fun like you said. Loved Mechagon because it felt very cheesy to me! Although, Suramar has to be my favorite story.

Let me read what you have written so i can judge it!
Thank you.

Heheheheee

It’s fun in that cheesy over the top smashing action figures together way when it is done well. When it isn’t and takes itself too seriously you end up with dreadful storeytelling like BfA that just makes you unsub uwu

Agreed. I had a very good and strong storyline through the previous games, WoW & it’s expansions plus the supporting books. However as time has proceeded retcons have been done as shortcuts to explain things and bad out of game literature (opinion driven) have chiseled away at quality.
