I noticed, along with a lot of other players during The Great NoFlying Matter Of WoD.
The same lack of content never changed during the 19 days from when it was announced there’d be no more flying and when they completely reversed course with, “Oops our bad, we had no idea players were THAT serious about loving flying, so okay flying,” and the introduction of Pathfinder.
Yes the Selfie content patch was a joke. But that’s not why the greatest number of subs were lost in only 19 days.
90% of that cost was in buying the Ranks. So unless they changed the costs of the Ranks it still costs 10-12k gold. Pathfinder had ZERO effect on that you are still required to pay that gold.
I get the sentiment of “experience it all on the ground with everyone to start”. But c’mon. I experienced it all about 10 times before part 2 came out. Shorten the wait!
And that really distills the No-Fly crowd down in a single sentence.
“I don’t want you to be able to play the game in any way I personally disapprove of”
Put a ground mount on your bar and get over it.
It keeps people playing longer. That’s my defense. Lot of people would quit within a month or two of finally getting flying.
It takes less than three weeks to unlock PF2, with only an hour spent per day toward it, get over it… Not everything has to be instantly gratified.
Plus, with how easy it was to make gold, starting with MoP/WoD, there wouldn’t be any real grind to unlock it. You’d hit level cap and instantly unlock flying because you’ve had millions of gold for years.

This game is not a democracy.

If confused, re-read rule 1
That’s because wow has been lacking any choice since WoD. Ever since WoD the devs have been crafting an on rails experience instead of a open world adventure. The way the devs treat flying, the ultimate form of player freedom, the game has felt much more linear and much less open.
Absolutely not true. Devs can’t take flying out unless they want the game to tank. Pathfinder was the spiteful way to plug the hole of bleeding subs.
More people should have made a bigger fuss when pathfinder was first introduced. People should have said well if you’re going to gate flying like this I’m out until you put it back the way it was.
So we should just shut up and take whatever Blizzard shovels at us and be thankful? That’s not how it works at all.
How can it be a trade off when buying it (even per toon) is not even an option any longer? Asking for a friend who can’t follow your logic.
lol, ridiculous and would cost them more subs. other than you gold buying fanbois
OK. They can and they did and everything else you say is rhetoric.
You’re actually making things up like “subs tanked because of no flying” to try to justify your desire for flying.
If the devs REALLY wanted to remove flying why didn’t they?
They did .
Did they? I don’t remember a single expansion where we couldn’t fly at some point. I don’t think that counts as “no flying going forward”. Wanna try again?
Pathfinder is just used to argue from both sides of the coin.
The only problem is the way it’s implemented comes as spiteful to some people.
Again, for me personally it would be perfect if the requirements were:
- Explore all the zones (including later ones on new patchs when it comes out)
- Finish all zones main story quests
- implement it at the first major patch (X.1)
- do a medium length questline that rewards pathfinder at the end, similar to Allied races unlock questlines
WoD was supposed to never have flying, they just enabled it because of the massive requests.
What do you think would have happened if they stuck with the no flying going forward?
Thats exactly what I did.
Ever since blizzard decided to remove my ability to grind pathfinder at my own pace, i.e WoD, I’ve simply leveled my primary character to max at the beginning of an expansion, and then promptly quit the game and un-subbed until such time as pathfinder could once again be ground (mostly) without time-gates.
I refuse to pay Blizzard for an aspect of the game that I
- Didnt ask for
- Didnt approve of
- Am forced to tolerate on my own Dime.
Nope, Blizz will simply have to lose out on revenue while I play something else for 10 months.
Now, if only the majority of subscribers did the same, well…we’d all see a RAPID change in Pathfinder. But most are sheep, or are actually “Happy” with it for [insert some arbitrary difference of opinion here], so…its what we have to accept.
Let me guess.
