Why do mages and warlocks

Never use their staves to channel their spells? I know there will be no definitive answer from anyone at blizzard, however I find it odd that there aren’t animations tied to staves for spell casting. As an animator myself I have always wondered why they don’t utilize staves for animations for spell casters.

Something that comes to mind is the dks point at an enemy when casting their disease generators. This could easily be applied to mage and warlock spell casting.

Whats everyone’s thoughts on this?

this post’s question comes up a lot. and people have said because it implies a magic user relies on a physical weapon for their power source, if they dont have the staff, they dont have their magic, so wow wants it to look like the magic comes from them. personally if thats the case they dont need the extra weight of lugging around a 7 ft pole

i kind of wish mages had one spell, one spell that works with their weapon at least. like a spell to enchant/animate your staff an have it float around melee’ing enemies in its path, fantasia style

Blizzard didn’t bother to make an animation for wands outside the shoot spell ig? idk.
Plus what Sissy said. If the issue is the fact that people think staves and wands imply power is relied on a weapon, you’d think equipping them would be removed then since the hand casts are clearly staying. Because as it stands they are just useless stat sticks

We casters need 'em staves on our backs to look pretty. 0w0

The staves are useless. They just wear it for the fashion, makes them seem more mystical. :smirk:

It would definitely be cool but also I feel like if they planned to do something like that it would’ve been done when they re-did all the animations.

Would love to see it in the future though

pisses me off that we just have stat sticks while melee have really cool/nice weapons that they use. just a few spells i don’t mind doesn’t need to be every single spell.

or do something with it at least like allow us to use it to walk/like a walking cane typical generic mage/caster stuff.

I personally prefer them not to but it’s a really common question about a really common trope that is oddly lacking from WoW.

Yeah I never understood. The staves, in my mind, aren’t really the actual source of power. It’s just used as a focal point to channel the energy through (like how Shamans use totems but they can still use elements without them)

not sure if OP is asking for Asheron’s Call or Skyrim…

I want this and hope that they do this for certain spells :sob:

this is not only for mages what about druids? they carry around something they never use cats or bear forms use claws not anything else- would like to have iron claws or something similar instead of walking around with a weight you will never use

Because it would require a different casting animation for that spell for different weapon types. Blizz has always been stingy with animations like that for some reason.

My guess is that early on there were game engine or dev limitations that made it not worth it and it just became part of their design aesthetic not to include weapons in casting.

They have been slowly expanding the casting and attack animations over the last couple xpacs though, so you never know, it might happen some day.

Its mostly because when wow released the animations for spells and casting were already great improvements for what other mmorpgs had. Blizz didn’t start adding fancy new animations until much later.

Because then if you get disarmed you can’t cast.
