Not on this priest , really on any of my characters I struggle with raid dps specifically …… I feel like I struggle to break 110k when other people are pushing 170 + . This includes my demo lock , my ret paladin , really any dps class I have I’m awful on
Videos/guides.
Without seeing your activity logs only generic answers suffice
your gear. for a lot of dps, certain stat breakpoints will see a big jump in damage
besides that there’s really not a whole lot anyone can say without seeing your logs
You could be your enchants, gear, stats, etc. You’d definitely benefit from joining your class’ discord and reading the guides that they have. I don’t recommend videos because those can go out of date quickly and you have no idea when they actually recorded the video.
Rotation helpers can help to a certain degree, but I don’t find them a suitable choice if you’re running raids or keys. Rotation helpers in my opinion are more for learning a brand new class that you have no idea how to play.
It’s hard to say exactly with the information we have…but I always recommend practicing your rotation until you build muscle memory. It’s easier to focus on mechanics and DPS, when you don’t have to put much mental energy into ensuring you’re doing the right rotations.
You could also use the Warcraftlogs analyzer to see what you can improve on but keep in mind that it doesn’t really take mechanics into account. Then there is also the Hekili addon to help with your rotation…but again, doesn’t take mechanics into account.
Addons that help with rotations can be useful while you learn which buttons you should be pressing. They basically tell you which spell the best choice is based on single target or AOE situations. Hekili is a good example. Some of them light up the spell on your action bar too, like SpellFlash.
I’m not saying to use them on every single character, but if you notice some of your characters aren’t doing optimal dps, an addon like that can be helpful to learn the correct priorities in real-time.
If you’re not dying from avoidable mechanics then i think you’re doing fine
I use the maxdps addon. It has one for each class…i find it helpful. Good luck!
im pretty mediocre fo fwiw:
On top of running the best build and doing your rotations nearly perfectly (especially your burst windows) with as close to 100% uptime on your abilites as the mechanics allow, you need BiS for everything:
-max BiS gear in all gear slots with optimal stats
-enchants
-professions
-consumables: food, flask, weapon, rune, popping elixirs/potions
-tier set
and with the game nowadays, you probably need to be running a suite of weakauras that almost tell you which buttons to press and when. perfectly
i am sure I missed something, but each of these differences multiple themselves and if you are missing something, your performance could drop substantially.
but remember, a 50 parse is still a parse
Gear level, proper talents, proper secondary stats, proper rotation, enchants, consumables
As others said, if you’re not getting hit by the avoidable mechanics, you’re already off to a good start
There’s a lot that can be going on - I would recommend sitting down with someone who you are comfortable with to review logs. I know things changed for me when I started sitting down with friends reviewing logs and my game play.
I know some people also record their screen then look back - but that’s prob doing too much.
Usually, if DPS is drastically too low, that usually indicates an issue with rotation. I know on my ret paladin when I first swapped I was over capping and mismanaging holy power like no one’s business. While I know I still have improvements to make, it has gotten better now that I realize that issue.
Post your logs or let us know your main so we can creep them and offer more specific advice.
CD Timing is a big part
Dealing with strictly hypotheticals, I am going to assume you have gear, enchants, consumables and you looked at guides to at least partially understand your rotations, so here are my assumed reasons:
-
You mentioned a lot of classes. I will assume you are not fully comfortable with any rotation and spend a lot of times looking at buttons and not casting while performing mechanics.
-
Positioning. This is a big one especially when playing turret classes like Warlock. You want to move as little and as efficiently as possible to minimize casting downtimes.
-
Bad use of cooldowns and AOEs. Some bosses summon adds. People tend to sometimes save their CD for those phases then pop off, padding their dps numbers.
-
Lack of proper understanding of all your skills and thus not using them to their full potential or at correct times.
Agreed, this is also true for three healers right now. For example disc priest becomes much easier to play well with high haste. Much more uptime on mind bender or room for mistakes.
Is this me posting on an alt? I sound like it. You’ve been caught.
If you’re like me and play on an ultrawide, the actions bars being on the bottom can play some part in to why your dps is low because you’re looking down, and up and not trying to die from stuff. Placing your actions bars somewhere you can see better so you can see what moves are up, and what procs you have can help… but thats just my two cents, take it as you will
Like a lot have said, without seeing logs it is really impossible to give specific advice.
So I’ll give some general advice. Find out what buffs are placed on you during the fight, which ones prime a skill with extra damage output. Have a WeakAuras to track when it is on you, and learn to pop certain skills when certain buffs are up.
An example of this for the Demonology Warlock is Implosion. As this deals Shadowflame damage you can gain a large advantage in damage by combining this talent alongside with Dreadlash The Houndmaster’s Stratagem and Carnivorous Stalkers. Those talents enable your Dreadstalkers to spread a damage amplifier in AoE.
Every DPS class has these temporary boons that you get that affect an ability/spell(s), if you track them with bars or icons and stack them properly you will notice a good boost in DPS.
Improve your uptime and CD management. If you’re not dying, you might just not be using CDs enough.
Just to throw something out there.
You have many overlapping procs and CD windows that require perfect or near perfect execution to hit accounting for the lion share of any of your damage. Maybe you’re flubbing your execution sentence or something similar. Can’t say for certain without logs, but if you want to improve your damage, grab some weakauras from your class discord. They can better surface the procs with sound/visuals so you don’t miss three as often, and try to be aggressive with your rotation. Offload as much brainpower as you can to WA and focus on the stuff that matters.
