Did Blizzard ever mention what the lore of Demon Hunters is after the Legion expansion? Like their whole existence was to eradicate the Legion and now that the Legion and their leader Illidan is gone what did the Demon Hunters decide to do? I feel like Demon Hunters are the kind of thing that would continuously seek out a purpose considering they became something they can’t go back on specifically for a purpose that no longer exists.
They kind of can’t put the cat back in the bag. Fel corruption is forever.
It kinda defeats the purpose of them being playable if they just all dissapear after the expac.
I mean the short answer is because murdering all of them is wrong.
The realistic answer is because Blizzard’s writing team can’t be bothered with it.
My personal head canon is that after Legion we dipped out to Mardum with the Fel Hammer and started building a sick fel demon utopia, and we just visit Azeroth from time to time to quest for fun.
You know where that puts them?
In the same boat as everyone else. And with Illidan gone, free of one of the most abusiave cults of personality. Most characters “weren’t made for a purpose”.
With Illidan gone, a demon hunter is free of one of the worst conceivable cults of persoality in any world.
What does my demon hunter do? She puts her talents in service to the Alliance.(My Death Knight does the same for the Horde.) Her killing techniques against demons are surprisingly effective on other types of targets as well.
The fact that Sargeras is under chair-arrest only means that the Legion does not have top down leadership to continue the crusade. Meanwhile, there were many lesser lieutenants that could take charge in more local spots around the great dark. They would not have Argus to quickly and predictably resurrect the demons…but demons would still return from the twisting nether. And there would always be demons…so Demon Hunters as a faction on Azeroth could continue existing for the same reason that player Warlocks still exist. Speaking of which, if player warlocks can still summon demons onto Azeroth from other places in the great dark…then any lesser villains could also summon demons onto Azeroth; and the player Demon Hunters are perfectly placed to do that. And they don’t need Illidan, because they spent the majority of the Legion expansion putting together a class order hall with their own leadership that seems like it would persist when Illidan left again.
Also… here is a long term reminder. Eventually, the World Soul Saga is going to complete and be over. They will be looking for new things to do. And if Metzen is able to make sense of how much cosmic lore he wants in warcraft…then remember that Sargeras did not come “from” Chaos/Disorder…he was a Titan with a rebellious attitude. He did not create the demons to start with. He is not in charge of the cosmic force of Disorder itself. If the technology of anchoring souls worked on Argus, it has a rare chance of working as a technology somewhere else out there, either with a lesser or equivalent world soul to Argus. Or… “if” the cosmic force of Disorder has a pantheon of its’ own, they could exist and be out there and may have never made themselves known to Sargeras at all. They could appear in some future expansion with a different agenda and different methods from what Sargeras used…and in that way, the player Demon Hunters we have on Azeroth could help to confront or understand what that new threat might be.
Demons still exist even after Legion—Demons will always exist as long as there is a Twisting Nether to spawn them, as even truly destroyed demons are just shattered into essence that goes to spawn totally new demons.
So long as there are demons to plague Azeroth, there will be Demon Hunters to make sure they do not get out of hand.
I imagine its like the Death Knights. They can’t go back to a normal life because they turned themselves into fel corrupted demons, so they keep on fighting for whatever cause needs them. After all, Azeroth is threatened by some huge threat every year so its not like theres nothing for them to do.
for whatever it’s worth, the spa promotor npc in the center of valdrakken is a demon hunter. i guess work got hard to come by. honestly it seems to me like they’re largely doing whatever they want now
We only really headshot the Legion. 99.9% of them are still out there, and they’re still gonna be a threat even if they’re not one coherent force anymore
the demons didn’t just go away after the Legion fell, it just means they’re no longer unified under a single leader there will always be something to hunt
Pretty sure demons are still a credible threat right now. All we did was take out their leadership. Entire planets are probably still swarming with demons. Can’t be too hard to imagine that with Sargeras gone and not there to keep them in check, there’s a power vacuum with demon warlords fighting over who gets to be in charge.
Even if its not a direct threat to Azeroth in the short term due to said warlords realizing they probably shouldn’t take on the groups that took out Sargeras and his lieutenants, you don’t get to be a demon hunter by being the kind of person that would just let them go.
So true. Demon Hunters definitely fit the bill of - “No survivors”.
Illidan never really struck me as a leader who did much leading outside of by his own example; i.e. things like logistics, contingency plans, delegation, that kinda takes a backseat to being a really dope but equally cliche anime protagonist who others follow because he’s just so rad.
So at the end of Legion he gets to shoot his shot and outside of Altruis and Kayn who are very much opposed to the others ideas, there’s not really any kind of leadership or structure. Would’ve been a good idea for some kind of epilogue like “great job, you were a bad enough dude to stop the Legion, but keep an eye on that MASSIVE DEMON SWORD sticking out of the planet in case it, idk, acts like a beacon for more demons or the guy who stuck it there comes back to claim it.” Instead we immediately get told as Illidari that we’re part of a faction war and have to fight over the planet blood that’s seeping to the surface.
But then again Legion was a while back, maybe there was something like that and I’m just not remembering it
There’s also one who is using her leisure time for pet battles.
We have seen some demon hunter npcsbeing part of society or trying to fit in in one way or the other.
What does a battle hardened soldier does after the war? Thats basically an extra version of that. Some might have a family to go back that will receive them, some might be shunned by their own family, some don’t even have family or close people.
For kaldorei demon hunters we know they have a shared space with DKs and warlocks (and now even some primalists) in Bel’ameth. I think it is a very personal thing.
