Can you imagine skipping a tough trash pack by having your mage teleport you across the bridge? It would be epic!

To be fair, those kind of teleports take a immense amount of magical power. Probably why mages don’t have them .

I think we can all agree that demonic gateway was a bizarre add and makes no class fantasy sense.

but the legion doesn’t hop around the same world using portals. and warlocks don’t do that either. portals are for hopping between … demon-land and some world. Or maybe between worlds.
Kil’jaeden is never like “bwa ha ha i’m going to open a portal to… 30 yards that way!”
I just started being a warlock recently with this character, I do not really like alts I just like 1 main on each faction with a preference to my favorite faction Horde. But I was mage for most of my wow time… 
I still haven’t mastered using the demonic gateway system I’ll get the hang of it someday!

You don’t know what happens in a warlock portal. Maybe they’re jumping through another dimension to get those 30 yards away, Nightcrawler style.
Maybe they did. Who knows? from one of their hotspots on Az itself. Costs less mana than to another dimension?
I’m just sayin’ it doesn’t make sense. It’s not a demon portal. it’s just a teleport device with a weird forced warlock graphic.
Give warlocks something else, and give mages teleportation!

It means its a Demonic Gateway. Its not thematically superforced at all. A big part of warlock schtick is summonings and portals and gates. Yes mages have that as part of their “class identity” as well, but it doesn’t mean Warlocks shouldn’t get it. Stop being a pedant. You just want the spell on a mage to suit whatevers going on in your headcanon.
