WoW Voice Acted Quests wowvaq addon had up to level 30 fully voice acted yet was shut down saying something copyright when it was nothing more than an addon giving audio to guests witch is not doing anything outside of what other mods do. Blizzard plz let people do voice acting addons. Wow could have been fully voiced by now costing wow nothing.
Like the earlier addon from Bellular that attempted this, it probably violated the “unpaid third party person makes us look really bad” EULA.
Most likely because it used the sound folder that Blizz refuses to let us use now.
I mean the same could be said for my favorite Addon, “Soundtrack” which you can get MP3s to replace the music in WoW.
I just rip a bunch of Persona, FF7, FF14, and various other game and JRPG OSTs into WoW just for immersion sake.

I wasn’t even aware this mod existed, but that’s a major blow to accessibility.
I know not everyone even reads the quest text and the like, but it’d be nice to have at least a text-to-speech option for the people who might have trouble reading it, but are still interested in it. Blizzard, if you’re going to kill addons like this, you ought to plug the functionality into your game, as well.
But then they would have to put effort into dragging every penny they can out of you! we cant have that!
From Blizzards (alleged) response to the wowvaq team:
Blizzard has an explicit ban on addon-created in-game story content.
Blizzard employees liked the work.
Blizzard Legal employees felt that voice over crossed the line into in-game story content. It’s considered a “re-performance of established works” and if Blizzard doesn’t defend it, it opens the door for other people to re-perform the work without proper license.
Blizzard Legal employees win when deciding how stuff happens.
Edit: damnit fell for the necro. Curses.
Necro or not, you are correct. If you don’t defend your intellectual property, that can be used against you in further legal challenges. In this case the original work is being performed without authorization, which is not allowed under copyright law in most countries.
If it were a derivative work such as fanfiction adding on to the in-game story, that would likely be ok.
