Mage was mostly sorted out so that frost had frost powers and the other types of mages stuck to their stuff mostly.
Why did they mash up all the random spells again.
Edit: Switched to Shadow Priest

Just don’t use them then? It has 0 effect on your gameplay. Also because people have complained about abilities being pruned since WoD. I’d be willing to bet you were one of them, and making an outrage thread for attention.
I agree. Frost Nova is too good not to use on my fire and arcane mage specs. Can’t blizz be inventive and create a fire and arcane equivalent?
For levelling Fire Mages, frostbolt can help with slowing down mobs at lower levels, especially hard hitting ones.
Just because you specialization in an element doesn’t mean you don’t know how to cast spells from other elements. They’ll just be less effective is all.
OR…
the complaint is legit over how ridiculous it is to have fire spells on a frost mage
and frost spells on a fire mage
Particularly when they could just have spells for those respective specs with matching themes.
Seriously, who gets on a thread and attacks the person posting?
Well, if you want a lore explanation, it’s simply because your character isn’t dumb.
As part of a mage training, they learn a bit of every single school, except necromancy for obvious reasons, and later on they decide on a specialization. You don’t forget how to cast fire spells as a frost mage, you just learn more frost spells instead of fire.
if that were the case, I would have picked to use all the instant cast spells
It is not legit. You specialize in fire spells, but you are still a mage who can manipulate arcane and frost magic.
Because your a mage who specializes in frost magic. Why wouldn’t you know the basics of other magic schools?
That’s gameplay limitation, just as my hunter didn’t forget how to feed his pets, buy/make arrows or fight in melee when an enemy get to close after Blizzard removed those things.
It’s been stated a few times, but from a lore perspective you do learn a few spells from each school before you grow out of baby magedom. Then you specialize in the school you want etc etc. Yes I can understand visually you’d want those spells to be different but ehh what can you do?
This is similar to what’s happened with other classes also.
But playing across a dozen characters or so…it seems to me that most of the “extra” abilities/keybinds are things that won’t get any use. For instance, I recently created an Arcane mage, and loving it after playing fire for years, and I don’t see much need to use the frost/fire abilities I’ve picked up. I could use those, but they mostly just get in the way of my normal rotation and game play.
Quickly warrior!. Grab my bastard sword of badassery and deliver the final blow to banish this creature!.
I can’t!.
Quick… wait what?. Why?.
My spec is protection… I forgot how to use two-handed weapons!.
…
… what?.
Hah, reminds me of all the stuff I knew back-to-front in high school but now…not so much.
Khadgar (one of the most powerful mages in WoW) has even been seen using all 3 at once, so…yeah.
it is a poor mage indeed who limits them self to only one sphere of magic at a time, for by doing so they shut their eyes to the myriad possibilities of the arcane.
to truly master the arts, one must embrace all aspects of them, and learn to use them in their proper place.
-frostlocks you for 10sec-
This could be fixed with one of blizzards many underutilized systems, cosmetic glyphs
You’re not a frost mage when you learn them, you’re a mage. Specs are not classes.
