Why did socket bonuses stop being a thing?

Any one know? Leveling through Wrath/BC right now and seeing that on some gear and getting nostalgic.

because gem slots being colored in order to get the set bonus limited customization or something like that, so they just shifted over to the anything goes method so you could gem what you want without penalty.

i agree with the no penalty to gem what you want but it would be nice to see static sockets and socket bonuses make a return.

At the same point where enchanting every single piece was a thing or meta sockets too.

Shoulders/helm enchants…

Man, I really miss having more than a few enchants too.

Same reason reforging was removed.
It made bad gear usable so people didn’t farm as much, lowering blizzard play time metrics.
Probably.

Eh. If you had a red gem slot you could put a red, an orange, or a purple in there. Plenty of cutomization.

The real reason is that people whined about it “feeling bad” to not get the socket bonus. Tank and healers liked blue sockets IIRC but DPS hated them and it was sometimes correct to not get your socket bonus which is very “feelsbadman”. Unfortunately for all of us, DPS make up the majority of the game.

I miss them but also don’t mind the method of grinding sockets with a memento type system. I hate sockets being entirely RNG.

You didn’t always have to aim for the bonus either. It was a fun system. But as with anything profession related, they had to murder it. With fire.

it’s still less customization than every socket being prismatic, which is the point I’m making. And I’m always 100% in support of more agency for player gearing, so prismatic sockets just make more sense, in my view.

Truer words were never spoken.

Me also. Playing all my alts though old world areas and being able to increase my chances of survival ( I love this game so but I’m really terrible at it…need all the help I can muster) by utilizing gem sockets and many other items, has reminded me just how immersive World of Warcraft use to be…for me. I would spend hours farming mats and crafting these items and enjoyed every second of it.
/Thinks to self: : “what the heck happened to this game ?”

I don’t think anybody would want content that required more tanks and healers than DPS. That would be a sloooooooooooooooooooow game.

i mean…it could be fast, it would just need virtually no dps check, and to remain a challenge, a much much higher hps check or something

i wouldn’t want them to test an idea like this on a mythic encounter though

Not really. If they moved away from the holy trinity, then everyone would have to deal with everything, and there would be no more pure dps.

But, and most importantly: when you tank, you’re also tanking the other players.

It really isn’t. With no barriers of any kind, you simply pick the best option every time. Why even have gems if there’s simply a correct and incorrect way of doing things all the time?

There’s a reason enchanting has been substantially rolled back - it was semi-pointless as an RPG mechanic and was simply a burden and a gold sink. This is also the reason gems are much less significant than they used to be, showing up only infrequently, because they don’t really add much to the game now. It’s simply a flavor thing, an alternate form of power baked into an item.

Sockets simply represent X more power now, not a choice.

I mean yeah nobody’s arguing that point here though

if your class valued mainstat too much and needed a socket bonus since it simmed higher than say, ignoring a socket bonus in favor of going for more raw main stat or something though, putting an agi+hit gem into a blue socket wouldn’t feel too great if you were already hit capped, and things of that nature. Not all gems provided the secondary stats you preferred, and being shoehorned into doing things like that in my opinion feel worse than just gemming straight for the stat you want.

it’s an opinion sure but I think prismatics cut out a bit of frustration.

because people couldn’t figure out that green could fit either blue, or yellow and purple could fit either blue or red?

Which is probably why we now just get a triple-helping of mastery instead (whether or not we like it).

If I recall correctly, it was about the same time they limited the number of flasks/elixirs you could have active at once, and limited health/mana potions to once per boss fight. Their stated reason was they thought raiding had become too expensive in terms of consumable use and gear augmentation.

that’s a separate deal entirely tho, secondary stats and rings and weights are all sorts of effed and really need some retuning.

they stopped being a thing for the same reason everything other things stopped being a thing. to make it easier on themselves.
