I don’t think it’s “despise”, but I certainly don’t think there’s a great deal of love there for people who turn months of work into hours of “GO GO GO FASTER FASTER FASTER”.
Compare that to Crendor, who got his own NPC for pointing out pointless things that he thinks are neat. We should aspire to be a bit more like Crendor
I think because way back when there were a lot of mechanics that weren’t as obvious as they are now, so players created ways to make things work better. Then pretty soon those things evolved into being necessary in order to play competitively. It’s not impossible without addons, it’s just become something that people have grown accustomed to and rely on.
Lol, my computer was so bad that taking the ships from one continent to other often resulted in a game of roulette, When will i get out of the load screen for long enough to exit, and will it be the place i want to go or the place i was
Fun fact, I played a druid a lot because I could port to Moonglade (Kalimdor) and bind in Stormwind (Eastern Kingdoms) so I wouldn’t have to play that game
that evidently is going to change. Ion seems to want the game so addons arent needed to play it as far as combat and mechanix go…
So sooner or later it might not be required for you to take a college course on addons like weakauras and GSE just to play in higher content.

lol…some of the addons Ive tried out youd have to take a course on to get it all down, I think.
Its just easier at a point to play the game than try to set up the addon to help you play the game from my experience
You only need outside help if you want to play competitively. It was true in older MMOs too, and I think that’s true for anything in life when you want to excel in something and be “ahead of the curve.”
You don’t need a coach in your corner of the boxing ring giving you advice about where your opponent is weakest when you’re just boxing for fun at a gym. But if you want to distinguish yourself from other boxers and compete, then yes, it’s what you need to progress.
Go to Google, type in “what im looking for” weakaura in the search. Click through the first couple previews til you find one you like the look of, copy paste it.
If someone has no computer knowledge at all i could maybe see it being a problem, but this is a PC game, i imagine most people know how to use a search engine.
Anyone who doesn’t understand why addons are critical to this game are clearly showing they never played vanilla. 2004 was a different time. A time when software and users of software were not enemies, but instead worked hand in hand with each other.
I miss those days.
Nowadays it seems there is an antagonistic relationship that exists between software of all forms and the users that software was originally designed for.
People use addons because the default UI is terrible.
And that isn’t going to change. They hyped up their “UI revamp” in Dragonflight and it turned out to be worthless. I was looking forward to retiring at least some of my addons but wasn’t even able to get rid of low-hanging fruit like TomTom or Bartender.
Adding something as simple as a coordinates display to the UI is an easy no-brainer, but they weren’t even able to do that much.
Installing recommended addons doesn’t take hours lol. But I agree about watching videos. I hate it when people just tell me “WATCH A VID DUDE” because I cannot learn a fight simply by watching a video of someone with an overly crowded screen in an already busy fight. I have to run through it a couple times and I’ll get it then.
For pvp specifically, I don’t know of any major addons everyone talks about. Raiding there’s only a few. I only have details and dbm and I don’t use dbm after I’ve gotten comfy with a fight. People will usually recommend weakauras but I don’t use that either. That’s about it.
