What was the purpose of going there? Just to get numbers for his army?
Looking at the map it seems like a waste of time. Was it explained in the lore anywhere?

He needed the Sunwell’s power in order to raise Kel’thuzad as a Lich so that they could then open the portal to summon Archimonde, as Kel’thuzad (at least according to him and the Dreadlords) was the only person who knew how to open it.
Never played WC3, eh?
I see someone has forgotten the sunwell (it was the Sunwell, iirc raising non-humans was harder)
probably why he asked? lol
For additional context, just for fun.
Arthas also needed a special urn to preserve the remains of Kel’thuzad for the journey to Quel’Thalas. That urn was in the possession of Uther the Lightbringer and contained the ashes of Terenas Menethil, Arthas’s father who Arthas had already murdered.
Arthas slayed the paladin and then dumped out his father’s ashes to use the urn for Kel’thuzad.
… what a prick.
They never actually elaborate on the supposed magic of the urn.
My head canon is that it wasn’t magical at all, the lich king was testing the strength of his control over Arthas and removing a symbol of resistance by forcing him to kill his mentor and desecrate his father’s remains before setting off to crush the elves.
I’ve never played it…but as an RPer, I am a story nerd, and have honed up on Azeroth’s lore. I would hope there’s nothing wrong with asking for lore information on these forums.
To the OP; yes. As Degas explained above, Arthas did have a reason for marching through Eversong Woods. It was indeed to get to the Sunwell, a source of power great enough for him to raise the lich Kel’thuzad…but you aren’t wrong about it also being a means of strengthening his army’s numbers. And, he left behind many powerful Scourge to create a stronghold for his forces, which in-game is known as Deatholme.
He was never a good military tactician. I mean look what happened in ICC
Arthas heard the Windrunner sisters were into human men and wanted to sweep one off their feet.
Because he wanted to punch some elves in the face. I get it.
Must have been after Jaina dumped him.
I did. A lot. But its been a long time.
Do you think Garrosh would have killed him?
I still don’t get her issue.
Those people were infected, they had to die.
I sure wouldn’t want her at my back in a zombie apocalypse!
There were hot single frostmournes near his area and he had to click now
She was probably hoping against all hope that they could still be saved.
Or maybe Arthas would have just quarantined the city instead of executing the populace.
But Jaina does seem to be the one who when they learns that a person is bit by a zombie, or werewolf, would implore the group to keep the bitten with them.
One of the best sources for Warcraft lore can by found by searching on:
“your wiki guide to world of warcraft”
It will get you to warcraft.wiki.gg/wiki/… which is one of the best places to find that kind of information.
His main goal was the use the Sunwell’s power to turn Kel’thuzad’s remains/soul into a Lich proper. This would empower Kel’thuzad and with his knowledge of Dalaran and magic would allow Arthas and the Scourge to open a portal large and powerful enough to bring the Demon Lord Archimonde through to Azeroth at a locus of leylines in Dalaran.
It was a nice bit of additional benefit that slaughtering the elves increased the undead in his army.
Mostly explained in WCIII where it happened but there have been many references to it in WoW here and there most of which I believe are in the Blood Elf starting land.
He needed the Sunwell’s font of power to resurrect Kel’thuzad as a Lich. This was explained in Warcraft 3.
This is from back when Dreadlord = Burning Legion im guessing. Because why else?
If it wasnt for our plot armor ressurection from Tirion all of Azeroth would be an undead wasteland now.
